Ghost remains with Jon Snow; Nymeria chooses her wolf pack over returning to Arya. Lady, Grey Wind, Shaggydog, and Summer die. The published novels differ: only Lady and Grey Wind are confirmed dead in the latest material, while the other four remain alive—but the books are unfinished, so those are last-known statuses, not final endings.
The six direwolves and their fates
The Stark children find six pups beside their dead mother and each takes one. Their companions and outcomes differ between the completed television story and the novels’ latest published events.
| Direwolf | Stark companion | HBO series | Published novels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey Wind | Robb | Killed during the Red Wedding. | Killed at the Red Wedding; his head is attached to Robb’s body. |
| Ghost | Jon | Survives and remains associated with Jon. | With Jon at Castle Black in the latest published material covered here. |
| Lady | Sansa | Killed in season one after the dispute involving Arya and Nymeria. | Ned executes her at Cersei’s demand. |
| Nymeria | Arya | Reunites briefly with Arya, then stays with her pack. | Alive and with a large pack in the Riverlands. |
| Shaggydog | Rickon | Killed; his head is presented as proof after Rickon is captured. | Not shown dead. Wex Pyke reports that Shaggydog is with Rickon and Osha on Skagos. |
| Summer | Bran | Dies defending Bran in the cave beyond the Wall. | Alive with Bran beyond the Wall in the latest published material. |
The comparison draws on the continuity summaries for direwolves, Ghost, Shaggydog, Grey Wind, and Lady.
How the wolves’ stories unfold
Lady and Nymeria: one is punished for the other’s actions
After Arya’s clash with Joffrey, Nymeria bites him. Arya drives Nymeria away to protect her from retaliation, but Cersei demands that a direwolf be punished. Ned kills Lady, who was not involved in the attack. Sansa continues to remember Lady and her death.

Summer: a death in the show, but not in the published books
In the series, Summer dies fighting wights in the cave where Bran is under the Three-Eyed Raven’s protection. In the latest published book material covered here, Summer is still alive with Bran beyond the Wall.

Shaggydog: shown dead on television, last reported on Skagos in the books

Nymeria: Arya finds her, but she will not come home
Arya encounters Nymeria in the Riverlands and invites her to return. Nymeria turns back to her pack instead. The novels also leave her alive with a large Riverlands pack, rather than back in Arya’s domestic life.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the show and books have different answers
The show tells a completed story, so each direwolf has an on-screen outcome. The novels remain unfinished, and four wolves—Ghost, Nymeria, Summer, and Shaggydog—are still alive in the latest published material covered here. “Alive in the books” means only that their deaths have not been established in those events; it does not predict what future books will do.

The two versions agree on Lady and Grey Wind’s deaths, but diverge on the later fates. They also differ in how some events reach the audience: Shaggydog’s status in the books, for example, comes through Wex Pyke’s report rather than a scene showing the wolf on Skagos. The book-status summaries are continuity guides, not substitutes for checking the relevant novel where the distinction matters.
Do the direwolf names predict the Stark children’s fates?
Readers often interpret the names as foreshadowing, but that is interpretation, not established authorial fact. In a 2017 TIME interview, George R. R. Martin said of the adaptation, “The show is the show and it’s developed a life of its own at this point.” He was describing the show broadly, not confirming a particular meaning for the wolves’ names. Martin has also described the scene of the direwolf pups as the moment that gave him the first chapter of Game of Thrones, in a CBS 60 Minutes Overtime segment aired April 14, 2019.
