The series behind the headline is Mo Dao Zu Shi, also known as The Master of Diabolism and The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Crunchyroll announced the addition of its first two seasons on December 11, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. PT, in eligible international territories.
That launch was not the show’s original premiere: the donghua first debuted in 2018. The “six-year-old” description was accurate for the 2024 announcement, but is now historical. Viewers should also check their local Crunchyroll catalog, since the original announcement excluded Japan, South Korea, mainland China, and Russian-speaking territories, and streaming rights can change.
What is Mo Dao Zu Shi?
Mo Dao Zu Shi is a Chinese animated series, commonly called a donghua. “Anime” conventionally refers to animation from Japan, while donghua identifies animation from China, although both can appeal to the same international audience.
The series adapts the work of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu and follows Wei Wuxian, a gifted cultivator whose pursuit of the demonic path ends in his downfall. Thirteen years later, he returns and is reunited with Lan Wangji, a former classmate known for his discipline and righteousness. Their investigation into supernatural mysteries gradually opens into a much larger story involving old loyalties, clan politics, conspiracies, and the consequences of Wei Wuxian’s past.

Why the Crunchyroll release mattered
For international viewers, the move gave one of the best-known adaptations of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s work a more accessible legal streaming home in the territories covered by the announcement. It also helped broaden Crunchyroll’s donghua selection beyond Japanese animation.

Calling Mo Dao Zu Shi “fan-favorite” is best understood as a description of its established international fandom and reputation, not as a formal industry ranking. Its appeal comes from the combination of a long-form mystery, memorable character dynamics, intricate clan relationships, and a fantasy world that rewards attention.
Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Untamed: how are they connected?
The Untamed is a live-action adaptation of the same source novel, while Mo Dao Zu Shi is the animated adaptation. They share the central characters, broad story architecture, and setting, but they are separate productions with their own pacing, visual language, and adaptation decisions.
You do not need to watch The Untamed first. The donghua provides its own introduction, and knowledge of the live-action series does not remove the need to follow the animated version’s exposition. Conversely, viewers familiar with The Untamed may recognize major characters and situations without assuming that every scene will unfold identically.
The danmei and BL context
The source novel belongs to the danmei tradition, a Chinese genre centered on romantic relationships between male characters. That context is important for understanding why Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s bond is so central to the story.

However, the animated adaptation should not be marketed as if it promises the same level of explicit romantic content as the original novel. Chinese broadcast and censorship constraints shape what the donghua can state or depict directly. The adaptation can emphasize emotional intimacy, loyalty, longing, and shared history while presenting the relationship more indirectly. Viewers looking specifically for explicit BL content should set expectations accordingly.
What new viewers should know before watching
Starting advice: Begin with Season 1, keep the English subtitles on, and do not worry if the clan system or character names feel dense during the opening episodes. The story intentionally reveals its history gradually.
- Cultivation vocabulary: Terms for spiritual practice, supernatural techniques, weapons, talismans, and demonic cultivation recur throughout the story.
- Names can be confusing: Characters may be identified by personal names, courtesy names, titles, clan names, or honorifics.
- Expect time shifts: Flashbacks and nonlinear storytelling are central to how the series explains its characters and mysteries.
- Give the setup time: Political and supernatural relationships become clearer across multiple arcs rather than being explained all at once.

No prior knowledge is required, but viewers who enjoy layered mysteries and character-driven fantasy will generally get more from the gradual reveals than viewers expecting a simple episode-by-episode adventure.

Heaven Official’s Blessing
This is another Mo Xiang Tong Xiu adaptation, with a supernatural setting and a central relationship between two male leads. It is a natural next choice for viewers who respond to the emotional and mythic sides of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Scumbag System
Viewers specifically seeking another animated adaptation of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s work may also consider Scumbag System. Its catalog status and regional availability should be checked separately rather than assumed from the Mo Dao Zu Shi release.

The Untamed
The live-action version is the closest format alternative because it adapts the same underlying story. It is not identical to the donghua, however, and its availability depends on the viewer’s region and current licensing.

Readers who want the fullest version of the story and its danmei context should look for an officially published edition through the relevant publisher. Availability and edition details vary by market.
Release timeline and source context
The donghua’s origin dates to 2018. The Crunchyroll announcement therefore described a streaming expansion that took place roughly six years after the series began, rather than a new premiere. The announcement and related coverage were reported around December 10–17, 2024.
The key release details are documented in the Mo Xiang Tong Xiu news archive and the related series coverage. Because those details describe the 2024 launch, they should not be treated as proof that the title remains available in every eligible territory in 2026.
