The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers’ anti-American gimmick worked because it was staged as a joke: French-Canadian brothers Jacques and Raymond acted like loud, newly converted American patriots to needle the crowd. Memphis billing, little American flags, Jimmy Hart’s management and their “All American Boys” theme made the performance a sustained character rather than a single insult. It describes their heel act, not evidence of their real political beliefs.
Who were the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers?
Jacques and Raymond Rougeau were real-life brothers who formed a tag team in Montreal in 1982. WWE says the brothers signed with the company in 1985 and initially became hometown fan favorites. Their later villainous persona therefore marked a sharp change in how audiences were asked to see them.
In WWE’s retrospective account, the character shift began in 1987, after the brothers linked up with manager Jimmy Hart. They were then billed from Memphis, Tennessee. WWE described them as “phony patriots who pretended to love America in order to mock it.” WWE’s retrospective on The Mountie also quotes Jacques describing how unusual the heel turn felt in his family: “The Rougeaus have never been [bad guys] in three generations.”
Why were the Rougeaus’ patriotism and “All American Boys” act ironic?
The joke depended on the gap between who the brothers were and whom they pretended to be. As French-Canadian performers, they leaned into an exaggerated American identity, presenting their affection for the United States as so conspicuous that it read as taunting rather than sincere. Their heel role invited the audience to resent the performance, not to take it as a statement of the brothers’ private politics.

Raymond Rougeau later recalled that the turn unfolded gradually: the brothers talked about loving the United States and moving there, carried small American flags and pretended to relocate to Memphis. He said, “I loved it because it was a slow transition to turning heel.” In his recollection, Jimmy Hart and the “All American Boys” theme were key parts of the act. ProWrestling.net’s August 14, 2020 report on Raymond Rougeau’s interview records those memories.
What made the gimmick more than a flag-waving insult?
The act combined several cues so the audience could follow the characters’ change over time:

- Memphis billing: The brothers were presented as coming from Tennessee, a clear break from their Montreal roots.
- Flags and relocation talk: Their small American flags and claims that they would move to the United States extended the false patriotism beyond a single entrance or promo.
- Jimmy Hart: The manager helped frame the pair’s new identity and accompanied their heel presentation.
- “All American Boys” theme: The song reinforced the image they were using to provoke the audience.
Together, these details made the turn legible as performance. Instead of asking viewers to accept the Rougeaus as straightforwardly patriotic, the act encouraged them to recognize the pose as deliberately overdone and irritating.
Did the anti-American gimmick improve the Rougeaus’ reception?
WWE’s retrospective presents the change as a career improvement: it gave the brothers a more distinctive identity, and WWE says their heel-run matches against The Rockers and The Hart Foundation were among their best. That is WWE’s qualitative assessment, not a statistical ranking of their matches.

Jacques also later recalled that the brothers started drawing people after becoming the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers with Jimmy Hart. That is his recollection rather than documented attendance data; the interview report does not provide ticket figures or a measured comparison. ProWrestling.net’s September 25, 2020 report on Jacques Rougeau’s interview attributes the claim to him.

The Rougeaus’ persona turned an apparent contradiction into its engine: French-Canadian brothers performed as obnoxiously pro-American heels, and each element—from the Memphis origin story to the flags and theme—helped sell the mockery. Its memorability came from the slow, coordinated character shift and the way the act gave audiences a specific performance to reject, rather than from any established evidence about the brothers’ real beliefs or a quantified attendance record.
