The documentary is Musk, a four-hour film by Alex Gibney. TIME reported on October 5, 2026, that it was scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on October 9. The “fighting back” refers to Elon Musk’s reported insults aimed at Gibney on X and a defamation lawsuit threat from Musk’s lawyer—not a lawsuit that TIME said had been filed.

Which Elon Musk documentary is this?

It is Musk, directed by documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney. TIME described the four-hour film as critical of Musk and interviewed Gibney about its arguments and the dispute surrounding its release. The article is an interview and report, not an independent review or a legal finding about the film’s claims. TIME’s October 5, 2026 report is the source for the release and interview details below.

Why is Musk reportedly fighting back?

TIME reported that Musk insulted Gibney on X and that Musk’s lawyer threatened Gibney with a defamation lawsuit. The report did not say that a suit had been filed. It presents the confrontation in the context of a film that Gibney describes as critical of Musk.

Gibney told TIME: “It’s certainly critical, but I think the criticism is earned. This is a rigorous and meticulous investigation of somebody, and it ends up being critical.” That is the filmmaker’s defense of the film, not an independent judgment that every claim in it is correct.

What does the film say—and what remains unproven?

In the interview, Gibney described questions the film raises about a text message Ashley St. Clair said Musk sent before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The message referenced “10,000 lasers in space.” Gibney said the film uses it to raise questions, but explicitly told TIME: “We did not assert that Elon Musk had changed votes in 2024.” The interview does not establish that Musk changed votes.

The film also raises questions about data accessed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and whether it reached Musk. Gibney’s answer to TIME was: “We don’t know.” Those are questions raised by the filmmaker, not established findings about the data’s destination.

Gibney also offered views about Musk’s companies, government support, AI, and political power. Those judgments should be read as his commentary in the interview; the report does not independently substantiate every assertion about the companies or government support.

When and where can you watch Musk?

TIME reported a scheduled U.S. theatrical arrival date of October 9, 2026. That date is a reported release schedule, not confirmation that the film will screen in every U.S. market. The TIME report does not name a streaming service or provide a digital-rental, physical-media, or home-release date, so no post-theatrical viewing option can be confirmed from it.

For international distribution, TIME reported that Universal Pictures controlled the rights and had delayed rollout amid political sensitivities before standing by the film. A Gibney representative told TIME that international distribution had been worked out after an October 2 call with Universal, but supplied no details. The report therefore does not specify territories, local dates, or platforms.

What happened with the film’s trailer ads?

TIME said YouTube, Meta, TikTok, and X had initially declined to run the trailer because of its political content, citing late-September reporting by The Hollywood Reporter. By the time of TIME’s September 30 interview with Gibney, the reported status had changed on some platforms:

  • YouTube and Meta: TIME said they had begun allowing ads for the trailer.
  • TikTok: TIME said it was not allowing the ads at that point.
  • X: Gibney’s representative told TIME they had seen no evidence that X had allowed the ads.

These are platform statuses reported by TIME on October 5, 2026, and may change.
