‘The Diplomat’ Review: Keri Russell’s Political Drama Is Still Building

The Diplomat’s blend of diplomatic maneuvering and marital conflict gives Keri Russell’s political drama its spark. Through Season 3, the performances stay sharp even as the plot grows less plausible.

The Diplomat is worth watching if you want political intrigue driven as much by personal fallout as by diplomacy. This review covers the series through Season 3: Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler faces a reshaped Washington and a new president, while the show’s sharp performances and brisk plotting keep its increasingly heightened turns moving. The trade-off is plausibility: this is more geopolitical soap than a grounded portrait of diplomatic work.

What is The Diplomat about?

Netflix describes The Diplomat as a contemporary political drama about relationships between countries and people. Russell plays Kate Wyler, a U.S. diplomat whose high-stakes appointment as ambassador to the United Kingdom puts her public role in collision with her marriage to Hal (Rufus Sewell), an ambitious political strategist. The series finds its most distinctive energy in that collision: negotiations and political maneuvers carry consequences at home, while private loyalties complicate the work of statecraft. Netflix’s series page outlines the premise and current cast.

What changes in Season 3?

This review includes Seasons 1–3, with particular attention to Season 3. It begins in the aftermath of Kate accusing Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of involvement in a terrorist plot. The president’s death elevates Penn to the presidency, turning the succession into a personal and political upheaval for Kate and Hal as well as for the people around them. Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn told Netflix Tudum, “Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.” The phrase captures the season’s engine: success does not settle Kate’s predicament; it changes its terms. Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 guide provides the setup and cast details.

Bradley Whitford joins the season as Todd Penn, Grace’s husband; Aidan Turner appears as a guest star. The returning ensemble includes David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh and Rory Kinnear alongside Russell, Sewell and Janney. The enlarged political circle gives the series new combinations of ambition, access and personal friction to play with.

Why the political and personal stories work together

The show’s strongest idea is not that diplomacy is a backdrop for a marriage drama, or that marriage supplies a break from politics. Each storyline pressures the other. Kate and Hal’s relationship is intimate, but their disagreements can alter how they operate in public; diplomatic choices become personal tests of trust and ambition. Whitford described the effect this way: “The thing that I love about this show is the diplomacy is always just amplified and resonating with what’s going on personally.” He also said, “Shows that really hum, that resonate and become a chord, are the ones where the political issues are resonating with the personal issues.” Whitford’s Netflix Tudum interview makes clear why the blend is central to the series rather than a side plot.

That interplay also gives the show momentum. Diplomatic crises create pressure, while relationship conflict makes each decision land beyond the meeting room. Russell and Sewell anchor the push and pull, and Janney’s arrival at the center of presidential power adds a fresh counterweight. The result is a drama that can move quickly without treating politics as a sequence of abstract briefings.

Is The Diplomat realistic?

Not consistently, if realism means a restrained account of how diplomacy works. The Guardian’s Hannah J. Davies praised its performances, tense action and erudite script, but argued that enjoying it requires substantial suspension of disbelief. Her review calls it “frequently excellent, often erudite” while describing the show’s successful mode as a “spicy geopolitical soap.” That is a critic’s assessment, not a claim that the series is a documentary-style account of diplomatic practice. Davies’s Guardian review captures the key qualification: the show’s political language and setting lend it texture, but its escalating turns are designed for drama, not strict plausibility.

Whether that is a flaw depends on what you want from the series. If you need a procedural that stays within the bounds of likely diplomatic practice, the heightened plotting may wear thin. If you are happy to accept a thriller’s compressed crises and soap-opera-sized complications, the same excess helps keep the story lively.

Is The Diplomat worth watching?

For viewers who enjoy intelligent, fast-moving political drama with a strong relationship at its center, yes. The ensemble performances and the way private conflict reverberates through public decisions are the clearest reasons to start—or continue—the series. The caveat is that the plot sometimes asks for more belief than its setting can earn. Treat it as a character-driven political thriller with deliberately heightened stakes, rather than a realistic guide to diplomacy, and its mix of wit, tension and marital friction is easier to enjoy.

How many seasons are available?

Netflix’s guide, published July 8, 2026, lists three seasons and says all eight Season 3 episodes are streaming. Availability can vary by territory, so check the Netflix catalog where you live. Netflix Tudum’s guide also reports seven Primetime Emmy nominations for the series, including Outstanding Drama Series, and Keri Russell’s 2026 Actor Award win for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
