Spoilers for season one, episode six, “Crimes of Passion.” Evie is pregnant with Danny’s child and has left Pete. At her parents’ cabin, a confrontation turns violent: Pete shoots Danny, then Evie shoots Pete. Evie and her father are arrested. The finale leaves Danny and Becka’s marriage—and the meaning of Evie’s final smile—unresolved.
What happens in The Couple Next Door season-one finale?
Evie is staying in a cabin on her parents’ property after leaving Pete. She tells Danny that she is being held captive. Danny and Becka go to check on her and find that she is not being held there. Evie believes she and Danny are in love and will be together, but Danny and Becka do not share that belief.

Pete arrives with a gun. In the ensuing confrontation, he shoots Danny in the leg. Evie gets hold of the gun and shoots Pete in the torso. Pete survives and is taken to hospital; TVLine reports that Evie and her father are arrested.
Why does Evie smile at Danny?
The finale ends with Evie smiling at Danny as she is taken away. The episode does not explain the look, and the available finale interviews do not establish an official meaning. One plausible interpretation is that Evie remains attached to her imagined future with Danny, even after he has rejected it. That reading is an interpretation, not a confirmed promise that they will be together or an indication of what Evie will do next.

Do Danny and Becka stay together?
The finale shows Danny and Becka shaken by what happened, but it does not confirm whether they reconcile. In interviews with TVLine and TV Insider, Sam Heughan and Jessica De Gouw suggested that the couple might work through the crisis. Heughan pointed to communication, trust, and honesty as possible foundations for their marriage, saying, “I think maybe because of the life that they were leading, that might be the thing that’s their salvation, the fact that they have a basis of communication and trust and honesty and that they’re striving for something bigger.” That is the actors’ view of the couple’s prospects, not an outcome shown on screen.
Will Evie and Pete get back together?
Eleanor Tomlinson said she did not think Evie and Pete would stay together: “I don’t think that they stand together. I think that they probably decided to split,” she told TV Insider. Tomlinson also said Evie needed serious help and likely jail time. Alfred Enoch noted that Pete survives, leaving open what follows after he is taken to hospital. The episode itself does not show the characters’ later lives or settle their futures.

Who are the couples in season one?
The first season follows schoolteacher Evie Greenwood (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete Thomas (Alfred Enoch), who move into an upscale neighborhood and become friends with their neighbors: traffic police officer Danny Whitwell (Sam Heughan) and yoga instructor Becka Whitwell (Jessica De Gouw). A passionate night involving Evie and Danny draws the couples into a sexual entanglement that drives the season’s jealousy and conflict. Channel 4 described the series as “an addictive, emotional roller-coaster with something to say about modern sexual mores,” in a statement from its Head of Drama, Caroline Hollick.
Is season two a continuation of this story?
No. Channel 4 described season two as a brand-new story with a new lead cast, while Hugh Dennis returns. Its central characters are Charlotte, Jacob, Mia, and Leo; the season-one cabin confrontation involving Evie, Pete, Danny, and Becka is a separate storyline. Channel 4’s November 2024 announcement said season-one episode one had more than one million streams in its first seven days on Channel 4, making it the broadcaster’s biggest scripted streaming launch at that time. That figure is specific to that episode, platform, and seven-day period.

Is the series based on Shari Lapena’s book?
