For viewers invested in Kate and Dennison, that choice can feel like a missed opportunity—but it is not the only way to read the season’s romantic turns.
Why Kate and Dennison can feel like an unfinished romance
The show has invited viewers to see a possible connection between Kate and Dennison, but Season 3 does not turn that attraction into a relationship. The Daily Beast’s Emma Fraser described them as a “will-they-won’t-they pairing” and wrote that fans of it “might feel short-changed.” That is one reviewer’s judgment, not evidence of a measured or universal audience consensus. The sense of a missed opportunity comes from the gap between tease and payoff: Dennison remains a romantic possibility, while the season develops a different pairing. The attraction can still add tension and texture, but viewers hoping for a decisive Kate–Dennison story are left without one in the Season 3 account reviewed by Fraser.
What Season 3 gives Kate instead
Callum makes the romance explicit
Season 3 introduces Callum Ellis as a romantic partner for Kate. Marie Claire’s explainer describes him as a new romantic prospect and says Episode 7 makes clear that Hal has competition for Kate’s heart. Its account also leaves Kate’s romantic prospects unresolved at the finale. Marie Claire’s Season 3 explainer

That choice changes the shape of the question. Instead of simply asking whether Kate and Dennison will act on their attraction, the season gives her another relationship and leaves her future unsettled. Fraser regarded the Callum romance as a bold choice that pays off, offering a different response from the disappointment some Dennison-focused viewers may feel.
Hal remains more than a romantic obstacle
Kate and Hal’s marriage is the series’ central romantic relationship, even as Season 3 separates them publicly and privately. It is also bound up with their political lives, so their conflict cannot be neatly separated from the show’s larger story. Netflix creator Debora Cahn calls the season “the split,” referring both to the Wylers’ relationship and to the US–UK relationship. Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 interview with Debora Cahn

The same interview recalls the couple’s beginnings through flashbacks to Baghdad in 2010. Cahn says Hal was prepared to end the romance to protect Kate’s career, while Kate imagined a partnership in which they could take turns prioritizing each other’s careers. That history gives their marriage its own unresolved emotional stakes; it is not simply an obstacle the show can remove to clear the way for another pairing.
How the three romantic threads differ
| Relationship | What Season 3 does with it | Narrative role |
|---|---|---|
| Kate and Austin Dennison | Maintains an attraction without making it a consummated romance in the Season 3 accounts cited here. | An unresolved possibility; its appeal depends on whether viewers want the flirtation to become a relationship. (The Daily Beast, Emma Fraser, October 17, 2025: review) |
| Kate and Callum Ellis | Introduces a new romantic relationship for Kate. | A distinct romantic turn that gives Hal competition and redirects attention from the Dennison possibility. (Marie Claire: Season 3 explainer) |
| Kate and Hal Wyler | Splits the couple while keeping their emotional and political entanglement central. | A long-running marriage whose private history and public consequences shape the season. (Netflix Tudum: creator interview) |
These threads differ in payoff, not just in who might be a better match for Kate. Dennison represents a possibility still waiting for a decision; Callum represents a relationship the story has actually introduced; Hal is part of a marriage with shared history and political consequences. The available sources do not establish comparative screen time, so the distinction is about narrative function rather than minutes on screen.

Was it really a missed opportunity?
For a viewer whose main investment is seeing Kate and Dennison finally become a couple, Season 3 can reasonably feel like a deferral: it keeps their attraction alive without resolving it, then gives Kate another romance. But that reading is not the only plausible one. Callum’s arrival broadens the romantic conflict, while Hal’s central role makes Kate’s choices inseparable from the marriage and its political fallout.
The evidence supports a specific claim—that the season may disappoint viewers who wanted the Dennison thread resolved—not a claim that fans as a whole demanded that outcome. Fraser’s review explicitly recognizes both reactions: possible disappointment over Dennison and a positive view of the Callum turn.

What Season 4 confirms—and what it does not
Netflix announced that Season 4 returns on October 15, 2026. Its announcement foregrounds the threatened Kate–Hal marriage and the political conflict involving Grace Penn and Hal, but it does not promise that Kate will choose Hal, Callum, or Dennison. The finale leaves Kate fearing that Hal and President Penn have double-crossed her, keeping the emotional and political questions intertwined rather than settling her romantic future. Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 interview and Season 4 context
So the opportunity has not necessarily vanished; it remains unresolved. Whether Season 4 turns the Dennison attraction into a fuller romance is still unknown.
