Ebony survives. She breaks the demon’s hold, wins back custody of her children, and leaves with them for Philadelphia, intending to try to repair her estranged marriage. Alberta and Bernice do not survive. The ending is a hopeful new start, not proof that the marriage has been fixed.
What happens at the end
The climax moves quickly, and the order of events matters for understanding who survives and why. Netflix Tudum’s spoiler explainer by John DiLillo, published August 30, 2024, lays out the sequence in these steps:
- Alberta dies before the climax. She tries to confront the entity with a Bible and is killed.
- Ebony comes home to a death scene. She finds Alberta dead, with a burning cross on the wall.
- The demon possesses Andre and takes Alberta’s form. The entity now uses a figure Ebony trusted.
- Bernice explains the house’s history and tries to help. The previous mother in the house killed her own family after her son Trey succumbed to the demon, and Trey is the name Andre has been whispering. The demon kills Bernice and takes on Ebony’s shape.
- Ebony turns to Jesus. With little hope left, she draws on her love for her children, and the demon flees.
- Cynthia helps Ebony win back her children. Ebony then sets off for Philadelphia to try to mend things with her husband.
Bernice’s role is limited. Her earlier failure is the reason she urges Ebony to fight back, but she does not deliver the final victory. Ebony has to act herself.
Who survives, character by character
| Character | Outcome at the end | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ebony (Andra Day) | Survives; the demon flees | Wins back her children and leaves for Philadelphia. Her victory comes from her own act of faith, not from Bernice. |
| Her children | Survive | Regain custody with Cynthia’s help. |
| Cynthia | Survives | Moves from a skeptical social worker to an ally of Ebony. |
| Alberta | Dies before the climax | Killed after confronting the entity with a Bible. The demon later takes her form. |
| Bernice | Killed by the demon | Dies while trying to help Ebony. |
What the ending means
Netflix’s explainer ties the demon’s transformations to inherited family trauma. Glenn Close, who discussed Alberta’s demonic form with Netflix, frames it as a way of showing how a family can confront and overcome generational cycles of abuse. Director Lee Daniels describes Alberta as embodying Ebony’s fears and anxieties. Read together, the spiritual victory is also a confrontation with the damage Ebony carries from her family.

That is an interpretation built on the director’s and cast’s comments, not a single exhaustive allegorical key the film spells out. Daniels summarized the story to Netflix this way: “a story about a broken family that happened to also include a demonic entity.” He also said, “I didn’t see it as a horror film, at least not in the way people have come to expect.” Andra Day told Netflix that the film “is a story with a social justice message that deals with family trauma, PTSD, and cyclical brokenness,” and that it deals with family, faith, restoration, and reconciliation.
The ending is deliberately open on the marriage. Ebony leaves intending to try to repair things with her estranged husband. The film closes on hope and a fresh attempt, not on a confirmed reconciliation.

Is The Deliverance based on a true story?
Netflix describes the film as inspired by true events. TIME’s Megan McCluskey, in an article also published August 30, 2024, reports that the film dramatizes the alleged 2011 haunting of the Ammons family in Gary, Indiana, and that Andra Day’s Ebony is a fictionalized version of LaToya Ammons. The word “alleged” matters. Reporting records that family members and some observers described extraordinary events, alongside child-protection concerns and skeptical assessments from psychologists. The supernatural events are not established as fact.
The film should be read as a dramatization of an alleged haunting, not as documentary proof of possession.

How the film departs from the reported case
| Element | Reported real-life case (per TIME) | The film |
|---|---|---|
| Names and family relationships | The Ammons family; LaToya Ammons | Family names are changed; Ebony is a fictionalized version of LaToya Ammons. |
| Setting of the religious rite | Performed at a church | Relocated to the family home |
| Person conducting the rite | A priest | The film changes the deliverance figure; TIME does not name the film’s replacement. |
| Custody outcome | Custody intervention, later reunification | Cynthia helps Ebony win back her children |
These are differences in the film’s dramatization, not a one-to-one reenactment. Keeping them in view helps separate what the film invents for its story from what was reported about the 2011 case.
