Road Warrior Hawk (Michael Hegstrand) died on October 19, 2003; Road Warrior Animal (Joe Laurinaitis) died at age 60 on September 22, 2020. Their partnership began in 1983, grew into the Legion of Doom in WWE, and became known for championship success, a striking visual identity and a forceful style. The available obituaries do not establish a cause of death for Hawk, and The Washington Post reported that no cause had been announced for Animal at the time of its report.
How Hawk and Animal became the Road Warriors
WWE’s retrospective dates the team’s formation to 1983 in Georgia Championship Wrestling, where manager Paul Ellering brought Hawk and Animal together. The name Road Warriors followed them through their career; in WWE, the duo competed as the Legion of Doom.
Their look was part of the act: face paint and spiked outfits made them immediately recognizable, while their power-based presentation set them apart in the ring. WWE’s history credits them with tag-team championship wins across the AWA, NWA and WWE. Those achievements, combined with a distinctive presentation, help explain why the pair became a defining team for wrestling fans.
WWE calls their influence “unmatched” and says no pair has come close to matching their success, dominance and collection of championships and honors. That is the company’s assessment, not an independently measured ranking of tag teams.
