Paul Bearer, the eerie manager who helped define The Undertaker’s supernatural WWE mythology, was William Moody, a performer colleagues remembered as a genuine friend who loved wrestling fans. WWE announced Moody’s death on March 5, 2013, at age 58. The company later inducted Bearer into its Hall of Fame in 2014.
Who was Paul Bearer?
Paul Bearer was the WWE character portrayed by William Moody. WWE’s official biography says Moody entered the company in 1990; its announcement of his death says he made his WWE debut in 1991. The pages do not explain the distinction, so those dates should not be treated as competing accounts of a single, precisely defined first appearance. WWE’s biography and its 2013 announcement are the sources for those descriptions.
Bearer became best known as The Undertaker’s manager. With pale makeup, dark clothing, a high-pitched voice and an urn associated with The Undertaker, he was an unsettling presence who helped turn the manager into part of the act’s ominous atmosphere. WWE describes him as one of its defining managers and says he was integral to The Undertaker’s mythology.
How Paul Bearer shaped WWE’s supernatural stories
Bearer was more than a ringside companion. WWE’s retrospective places him inside storylines involving The Undertaker, Kane and Mankind, with his shifting loyalties helping drive conflict and deepen the characters’ shared history.

The Undertaker and the urn
The urn became a signature prop in the partnership, reinforcing the supernatural presentation surrounding The Undertaker. Bearer’s role gave that imagery a voice and a human focal point: he could interpret, intensify and complicate the character’s stories from ringside.
Kane and scripted family history
In WWE storylines, Bearer was revealed as Kane’s father, and his allegiances changed over the course of later feuds. This was fictional family history written for the wrestling narrative, not a claim about Moody’s real-life family. The story connected Kane to The Undertaker’s world and made Bearer’s choices consequential to both characters.

Mankind and other associations
WWE also names Mankind among the performers associated with Bearer. The company’s retrospective places these connections within his broader career rather than limiting his legacy to a single manager-client relationship.
The man behind the character
The deliberately strange persona was not how colleagues described Moody away from the storyline. In a WWE interview published after his death, Michael “P.S.” Hayes—introduced by WWE as one of Moody’s oldest friends—called the character “undoubtedly a real-life cartoon.” That was Hayes’s affectionate characterization of the performance, not a judgment about Moody as a person.

Hayes recalled that Moody loved the fans and that fans recognized his genuineness. He also framed a lesson he believed people could take from Moody’s life: “Live your life and chase your dreams and enjoy the ride along the way. Sometimes we get so consumed with chasing our dreams we don’t enjoy the ride, and by the time we learn to enjoy the ride, the dream’s over.” These are a friend’s memories and reflections, adding a personal counterpoint to Bearer’s macabre screen image.
