The Jackal survives, Bianca dies, and Nuria leaves with their child. The finale’s biggest misstep is not that it keeps its central assassin alive; it is that his increasingly chaotic escape and the brief Bianca showdown make that survival feel less earned than the series’ buildup promises.
Does the Jackal die in The Day of the Jackal finale?
No. The Jackal survives the season-one finale. Bianca is killed in their final confrontation, while Nuria has already left the family home with their child. The closing scenes then point toward another assignment: the Jackal meets Zina, who is also in danger, and their attention turns to Winthorp.

That outcome resolves the immediate question of who survives the standoff but leaves the Jackal’s marriage and next move unsettled. It also changes the shape of the story after the assassination of UDC: his death postpones River’s release indefinitely, benefiting the wealthy interests behind the killing.
What happens during the escape?
After killing UDC, the Jackal tries to evade pursuit and reach his family home in Spain. The escape grows more improvised and costly as he goes. He takes a couple’s camper van and kills them after they attack him, then continues toward home with the authorities closing in.

Bianca tracks him there, but Nuria has already left with their child. The Jackal kills Bianca and gets away, surviving another crash in the process. The sequence leaves him alive, but it does not give the confrontation much room to develop before it is over.
What is the finale’s major mistake?
The strongest case for calling the ending a failure is about execution, not its decision to let the Jackal live. The series has presented him as meticulous and controlled; the finale instead makes his escape feel messy and unplanned. That contrast can read as a lapse in characterization rather than a consequence of pressure.
Rank #2
Jonathan Ryan’s January 8, 2025 review for The Screen Scribe argues that the escape never feels as if the Jackal is truly at risk of being caught, and that its disorder sits awkwardly beside his established precision. Ryan also describes the Bianca confrontation as short-lived. Those are critical judgments, not objective measures, but they identify the finale’s central dramatic weakness: it builds toward a duel and then moves through it too quickly to deliver the full payoff.
The speed has an emotional logic—Bianca’s death is shocking, and Nuria’s departure makes clear that the Jackal’s family life cannot continue as before. Yet emotional force and dramatic development are not the same thing. The finale could land the shock while still giving the Jackal and Bianca’s final encounter more weight.

Is the ending still satisfying?
It can be. TV Insider called the finale a thrilling conclusion and argued that its cliffhanger did not erase the satisfaction of the ending. The turn from Bianca’s death to the Jackal’s meeting with Zina is abrupt, but it gives the season a forward direction and leaves a clear new threat in Winthorp.
That is why the ending can work as a shocking season break even if its mechanics disappoint. Nuria’s choice to leave with the child follows the danger she has discovered in the Jackal’s life; the Jackal’s survival preserves the possibility of more story. The weaker point is the bridge between those outcomes: the escape and the confrontation feel rushed relative to the care the series has spent establishing him as a planner.

The television series adapts Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel and the 1973 film, both of which end with the Jackal’s death. The series deliberately chooses a different fate, keeping him available for a continuation rather than treating the story as a closed pursuit.
In a December 20, 2024 interview with TVLine, Carnival Films executive producer Gareth Neame said: “Yes, we did always think about it as a returning series. But we obviously wanted to keep that very under the radar because of the ending of the novel and the original movie [where the Jackal dies].” The survival is therefore an adaptation choice, not simply an ambiguous final image.

Eddie Redmayne also described the intended effect of the closing moment in Sky’s official finale explainer: “And there’s a little question mark, and there’s the tease, and then there’s invisibility. There’s the ghost like quality to him, but he can just disappear, whether we get to go again or not. I hope that gives a certain catharsis either way.” The ending aims to leave the Jackal elusive, even as it teases what could come next.
What the finale changes—and what it leaves open
- The Jackal’s fate: He lives, reversing the ending of the source novel and 1973 film.
- Bianca and Nuria: Bianca dies; Nuria leaves with their child, breaking the family’s immediate connection to the Jackal.
- The political fallout: UDC’s death delays River’s release indefinitely, serving the interests of the wealthy clients behind the assassination.
- The next conflict: The Jackal and Zina are positioned against Winthorp, while the Jackal’s marriage and plans remain unresolved.
The change in source material and the quality of the new ending are separate questions. Keeping the Jackal alive creates room for another chapter; the finale’s short confrontation and haphazard escape make this chapter’s climax less convincing than it could have been.
