The Day of the Jackal was officially renewed for a second season by Sky and Peacock on November 22, 2024. But the renewal announcement did not reveal a plot or release date, so claims that season two will abandon a “54-year Jackal rule” are predictions—not confirmed story news.
What does “54-year Jackal rule” mean?
There is no officially identified “54-year Jackal rule” in the renewal announcement or the distributors’ descriptions of the series. The phrase is best understood as a framing for a possible break with the older story, not a named rule established by the creators or a documented industry convention.
The 54-year reference points toward the gap between the 1971 publication of Frederick Forsyth’s novel and the anticipated period of the new season. It does not establish that the television series must follow a particular plot rule for 54 years, nor that season two will deliberately overturn one.
What is confirmed about season 2?
Sky and Peacock announced the second-season renewal on November 22, 2024. Their official announcements did not provide a season-two synopsis, specific story developments, or a release date. The renewal confirms that the series is returning; it does not confirm what the Jackal or his pursuers will do next. Sky’s renewal announcement and Peacock’s announcement are the relevant official updates.

How the novel, film and series relate
| Work | Date | Relationship to the TV series |
|---|---|---|
| Frederick Forsyth’s novel | 1971 | Peacock describes the series as based on the novel. Peacock |
| Film adaptation | 1973 | Sky says the series is inspired by the novel and the film. Sky’s commissioning announcement |
| Television series | Contemporary setting | Sky calls it a “contemporary reimagining,” rather than a direct continuation of either earlier work. Sky |
That distinction matters when judging the “rule” claim. The TV show draws on earlier versions of the story but presents itself as a modern reinterpretation. The 1973 film is an influence, not evidence of what the second season’s plot will be. Sky’s executive-producer interview also discusses the series’ modern perspective and its references to the film.
Why a season-two departure is still only a prediction
A modern reimagining can change elements of its source material, but that general creative freedom is not proof of a particular change. Without an official season-two synopsis or episode details, there is no basis to say that the new season will abandon a specific ending, character fate, or plot convention from the novel or film. The claim works as an interpretation of the series’ direction only if it is presented as a thesis, not as confirmed news.

What the renewal announcement says about the show’s audience
Sky reported that the series drew 3 million viewers in its first UK week and was, at that point, the biggest Sky Original ever. Peacock said it ranked first on the service’s Top 10 TV Shows list and was a top-five streaming original in the US during its opening weekend, citing preliminary Nielsen data. These are distributor-reported figures tied to different territories and timeframes; they do not establish why the show was renewed. Sky and Peacock published the figures with the renewal news.
