The Darksaber is a one-of-a-kind lightsaber and a powerful symbol of Mandalorian leadership. Created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian accepted into the Jedi Order, it passed through a succession of rivals and allies—from Pre Vizsla and Maul to Sabine Wren, Bo-Katan Kryze, Moff Gideon, and Din Djarin. Sabine’s recovery of the blade helped rally resistance and renewed Mandalore’s bid for self-rule; it did not secure lasting freedom. The Empire later tightened its grip and carried out the Purge.
What is the Darksaber?
The Darksaber is an ancient lightsaber with a distinctive flat, sword-like blade: black energy edged in a bright, crackling white line. It first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, became central to parts of Star Wars Rebels, and later appeared in The Mandalorian. Its unusual appearance does not make it inherently more powerful than other lightsabers. Dave Filoni has described its flat energy blade as a distinctive design and said it is “not necessarily more powerful than any other lightsaber.” StarWars.com: Dave Filoni on Star Wars Rebels Season Three
Who made the Darksaber?
Tarre Vizsla created the weapon. He was the first Mandalorian inducted into the Jedi Order, and the Darksaber later became closely associated with House Vizsla and Mandalorian political power.

In Star Wars Rebels, Fenn Rau recounts the Mandalorian legend that the blade was made more than a thousand years earlier, kept in the Jedi Temple after Tarre’s death, and taken by members of House Vizsla. Why is the Darksaber important to Mandalorians?
The blade’s importance comes from the meaning Mandalorians attach to it. Its connection to Tarre Vizsla and House Vizsla made it a symbol of heritage and authority, while the struggle to possess it tied the weapon to competing claims over Mandalore’s future.
That symbolism should not be mistaken for a simple rule of succession. The Darksaber changed hands through conflict, recovery, and a gift, and its possession did not guarantee uncontested or permanent political rule. Its influence depended on the people who rallied around it and the circumstances in which it was wielded.

- Pre Vizsla: As leader of Death Watch, Pre wielded the blade in opposition to Duchess Satine’s pacifist government and sought to return Mandalore to warrior rule.
- Maul: In “Shades of Reason,” Maul killed Pre Vizsla and claimed both the Darksaber and leadership, making the blade part of a violent contest for control of Mandalore.
- Sabine Wren: After the Siege of Mandalore, the Darksaber was missing. Sabine found it among Maul’s possessions on Dathomir during the events of Rebels. Training with it also forced her to confront her past and her family.
- Bo-Katan Kryze: Sabine gave her the blade, and Bo-Katan took up leadership. The Empire later intensified its control of Mandalore; during the Purge, Bo-Katan was forced to surrender the blade and the planet to Moff Gideon.
- Moff Gideon: Gideon possessed the Darksaber after the Purge, reflecting how the weapon’s political meaning was entangled with Mandalore’s defeat and occupation.
- Din Djarin: Din later won the weapon from Gideon in combat, another transfer that underscores its contested history rather than a straightforward hereditary crown.

Sabine’s discovery gave the Mandalorian resistance a symbol as well as a weapon. She returned to Mandalore, opposed Imperial-backed leader Gar Saxon, and joined allies in a civil-war effort. After that struggle, she handed the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, helping rally support for a renewed effort at Mandalorian self-rule.

That success did not last. The Empire tightened its control, bombed Mandalore, and forced Bo-Katan to surrender both the planet and the blade to Gideon during the Purge. So “freed Mandalore” is shorthand for the Darksaber’s role in rallying resistance and a liberation effort—not proof that the weapon alone liberated the planet or secured lasting independence. Why does the blade look different?
The Darksaber’s flat, black energy blade gives it a silhouette unlike the familiar cylindrical glow of a conventional lightsaber. Filoni said the idea that the weapon was made by a Mandalorian—and therefore felt like part of Mandalorian heritage—made it more valuable within the story.
