The story opens after the Carryx, an alien power that seeks intelligent life, conquer humanity. People are taken captive because their intelligence is useful to the invaders. They must survive under their new rulers and among other species the Carryx have also conquered.
Why do the aliens conquer humans?
Rather than treating Earth as a source of familiar commodities, co-author Ty Franck described intelligence as the scarce resource the Carryx seek. In the GeekWire interview, he dismissed the idea of invaders coming “to steal our water, or our gold, or whatever,” and said the question was “what is the one thing in the galaxy that is actually scarce, that is actually hard to get — and that is intelligence.”

That premise shifts the story away from a contest over territory or raw materials and toward the value the conquerors assign to living beings. Humans are not simply an obstacle to be defeated; they are captives whose abilities may serve the power that defeated them.
What makes this a different kind of alien-invasion story?
Humanity starts from defeat
Many invasion stories focus on resisting an attack and driving the invaders away. The Mercy of Gods begins after that decisive loss. Daniel Abraham described the appeal, in the GeekWire interview, as “this very different kind of not-at-all-triumphalist vision of being a human in a wider galaxy.” The change in starting point makes survival, dependency and the limits of resistance central questions.

Captivity brings ethical compromise
The captives must navigate life under authoritarian power and alongside other conquered peoples. That setup makes accommodation and ethical compromise part of the struggle: how do people preserve themselves and their relationships when the power to set the terms belongs to someone else?
Conquest has a human historical echo
Franck connected the Carryx’s treatment of conquered people to historical rulers who took the most capable members of defeated populations to their capital, where cultures could mix. The authors’ comparison is an inspiration for the fiction, not a claim that the alien society reproduces one specific historical system.

Which ideas and influences do the authors name?
Abraham said the series has roots in the large science-fiction universes of Ursula Le Guin and Frank Herbert, as well as in the work of Viktor Frankl and Hannah Arendt. The authors also discussed biological convergent evolution as an idea behind the novel’s varied alien life forms. These are stated literary and conceptual influences; they do not establish that the book’s fictional biology is scientifically demonstrated.
