In an altered version, a pizza box obscures the dryer as Lilo emerges. That edit is separate from the film’s better-known post-September 11 climax redesign, which replaced skyscrapers and a 747 with a mountain ravine and the characters’ spaceship.
The dryer scene: what changed
Lilo tries to avoid her older sister, Nani, by hiding in a tumble dryer. In the edited version, a pizza box covers the action as Lilo comes out. Director Chris Sanders recalled that the pizza-box treatment was used for the international release and was the version available on Disney+ when he spoke to Cartoon Brew in 2022. The retrospective describes his recollection rather than giving a verbatim quotation, so the summary should not be presented as his exact words. Cartoon Brew’s 2022 retrospective
PolitiFact reported in 2020 that the pizza-box edit had appeared in the film’s original 2002 UK release to qualify for a lower rating. The outlet also reported that the version was used on Disney+ to prevent children from hiding in dryers. That safety explanation is reported context, not a direct statement from a named Disney spokesperson in the fact-check. PolitiFact’s fact-check
A different change: the climax after September 11
The dryer edit is often confused with a separate revision made during production. The original climax involved an airplane flying near skyscrapers. In a 2002 interview, Sanders said the filmmakers revised it within weeks after the September 11 attacks. The sequence remained nearly intact, but the skyscrapers became a mountain ravine and the 747 became Jumba and Pleakley’s spaceship. Sanders’s 2002 interview with Animation World Network

- Lilo?s an independent little girl; Stitch is a mischievous creature from outer space, and when their worlds collide, it?s love ? and chaos! ? at first sight.
These are different edits with different contexts: one changes how the dryer scene is shown in certain releases; the other reworks the climax’s imagery during production.
How the two edits differ
| Change | What viewers see | Timing and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer scene | A pizza box obscures Lilo emerging from the tumble dryer. | PolitiFact reported the version in the 2002 UK release; Sanders recalled the international version in a 2022 retrospective. |
| Climax | Skyscrapers and a 747 were replaced by a mountain ravine and Jumba and Pleakley’s spaceship. | Sanders described the production change in a 2002 interview, saying it was made within weeks after September 11. |
Which version is available now?
The cited accounts do not establish which cut is currently on every streaming service, in every territory, or on each DVD and Blu-ray edition. Sanders’s comment about Disney+ describes availability at the time of the 2022 retrospective, not a guarantee about the current catalog. To identify a particular copy, check the specific release or compare the dryer scene directly; do not assume that one platform-wide or worldwide version applies.
