The Conjuring: Last Rites works better as a farewell to Ed and Lorraine Warren than as a fresh exercise in terror. Its emotional center is the Warrens’ family, especially their daughter Judy, while the haunted-house story brings familiar scares and takes time to gather momentum. Viewers invested in the characters may find the closure satisfying; those hoping for the dread of the original film may find this final chapter less effective.
What is The Conjuring: Last Rites about?
Directed by Michael Chaves, the 2025 film brings Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga back as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Mia Tomlinson plays their adult daughter Judy, and Ben Hardy plays Tony Spera. The Apple TV U.S. synopsis begins in 1964, with the Warrens investigating a haunted mirror, then moves to 1986: a mirror given to teenager Heather Smurl becomes part of a frightening ordeal for the Smurl family in Pittston, Pennsylvania. In the film’s story, Ed’s heart condition has led the couple to stop investigating, while Judy’s relationship and family life run alongside the haunting. These are elements of the film’s fictionalized supernatural premise, not evidence that the events occurred as depicted.
Apple TV’s U.S. listing gives the runtime as 2 hours 15 minutes. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) lists an approximate runtime of 135 minutes.
Does the family story make this a satisfying farewell?
The film’s most persuasive reason to exist is the chance to spend one more chapter with Ed, Lorraine and Judy. Rather than treating the Warrens only as guides to a new haunting, it gives their family life a parallel role in the story. That focus supplies the warmth behind the farewell: the stakes are not just whether the Smurls can endure a supernatural threat, but what the work has meant for the Warrens and their daughter.

That emphasis can also pull focus from the Smurl family. The two storylines take time to converge, and viewers primarily looking for a concentrated haunted-house film may find the balance less satisfying. The Associated Press review by Mark Kennedy describes the movie as a send-off that blends the Warrens’ personal story with paranormal horror; Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup of first reviews similarly reflects a divide between praise for its heart and complaints about its length, crowded storytelling or lack of scares. These are critical judgments, not measurements of audience response.
Is The Conjuring: Last Rites scary?
It has horror imagery and forceful scare sequences, but it does not consistently build the sustained suspense that made the original film frightening for many viewers. Kennedy’s AP review faults the reliance on thunderstorms, quick-cut monsters and a slowly building climax. Those familiar devices may still work for viewers who enjoy the franchise’s style, but they are less likely to surprise someone looking for a new source of dread.

Content guidance is strong. The BBFC’s UK classification advice flags horror, violence, injury detail, possession, jump scares, blood, and upsetting themes involving illness, bereavement and stillbirth. The AP reports a U.S. R rating for bloody and violent content and terror. Those are separate national classifications and should not be treated as equivalent rating systems.
How does it compare as horror and as a finale?
| What you’re looking for | How the film fares |
|---|---|
| A farewell to the Warrens | Its family focus gives Ed, Lorraine and Judy the emotional weight that supports the finale. |
| A fresh, frightening haunting | The AP review identifies familiar devices, including thunderstorms and quick-cut monsters, rather than a consistently novel scare approach. |
| A tightly paced haunted-house story | The film’s parallel family and haunting threads take time to converge; critics in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup differed on whether the character focus justified that time. |
| A standalone horror film | The story is tied closely to the Warren family, so its farewell value is stronger than its case as an isolated haunted-house experience. |
On balance, its success depends on which half of the premise matters more to you. As a character-centered goodbye, it has a clear emotional purpose. As a bid to recapture the franchise’s most unsettling horror, its familiar scares and slow build are harder to defend.

Is this the last Conjuring movie?
Last Rites is framed as a farewell for Ed and Lorraine Warren, but the title alone does not establish that no further film in the broader franchise will be made. The available listings identify this installment and its cast, director and story; they do not establish the future of the franchise. It is safest to read “last” as the film’s positioning of the Warrens’ story, not as proof that the series can never continue.
