Spoilers for the ending and credits of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The film’s final confrontation ties the Smurl family’s haunting to the mirror from the Warrens’ earlier case. Ed frees the Smurls and his own family; Judy’s wedding to Tony provides the story’s emotional closure. The credits then end on archival material and a “conjure mirror” caption—a brief thematic coda, not a conventional sequel scene.

How The Conjuring: Last Rites ends

The mirror links the opening to the Smurl case

The opening flashback introduces a wooden-framed mirror decorated with three cherubs. The entity associated with it attacks a pregnant Lorraine; Judy survives a dangerous birth, and the Warrens escape the threat. Years later, in the film’s 1986 setting, Ed and Lorraine are retired and reluctant to investigate the Smurl family’s disturbances. Judy’s clairvoyance draws her toward the case, and her parents follow.

The Smurls discover that a mirror given to one of their daughters is connected to the disturbances in their home. Even after the family believes it has gotten rid of the object, the mirror returns. That connection brings the Warrens face to face with the threat they encountered before.

Ed resolves the confrontation

The entity targets Judy, making the case a danger to the whole Warren family as well as the Smurls. The confrontation ends with Ed freeing the Smurls and his own family. In the movie’s story, the mirror is the link between the earlier attack and the haunting; that supernatural explanation belongs to the film and is not independently verified history.

Judy and Tony’s wedding closes the family story

After the danger has passed, Judy marries Tony. Performers connected to families from earlier films appear among the wedding guests, making the gathering a reunion as well as a family milestone. Lorraine’s speech and her vision of a peaceful future with Ed give the ending its hopeful note: the central resolution is not another investigation, but the family’s chance to be together.

Is there a post-credits scene?

There is a short coda at the end of the credits, but it is not a new scene in which a character appears to set up the next film. Archival photographs and footage of the real Ed and Lorraine Warren lead to a final image of Ed with the mirror in the background. Text identifies the object as a “conjure mirror” and connects it to the film’s title. Us Weekly and ComicBook.com describe the tag as an explanation of the title’s mirror reference, rather than a direct sequel announcement.

The film gives the mirror a central supernatural role, but the credits’ archival images do not establish that the events depicted in the story happened as shown. The tag works as a link between the fictional plot and the Warrens’ real-world image, not as proof of the haunting or the mirror’s powers.

Does the ending set up another Conjuring movie?

The Warren family’s story receives a clear ending here: the entity is defeated, Judy begins married life with Tony, and Lorraine imagines a happy future with Ed. Director Michael Chaves called the film “a final chapter to their family story” in a September 4, 2025 interview with We Live Entertainment. He also said the filmmakers chose to bring that story to a close on their own terms.

Chaves left room for spin-offs, so the film’s ending does not rule out further stories in the franchise. But the credits tag itself does not announce a new Warren-led movie or show a specific next plot. The distinction is between closure for Ed and Lorraine’s family arc and the possibility of the wider franchise continuing.

What is based on the reported Smurl case?

The film is set in 1986 and is inspired by the reported Smurl haunting in Pennsylvania. In the same interview, Chaves said the Smurl sisters worked with the filmmakers from script development through production and that the team tried to listen to their accounts. That describes the filmmakers’ process; it does not verify the film’s supernatural explanation. The events involving the entity, the mirror’s return, and the Warrens’ confrontation should be understood as the movie’s dramatized story.
