The Conjuring: Last Rites is the ninth film in the wider Conjuring universe, not the ninth entry in the main Ed and Lorraine Warren series. Released in theaters in 2025, it reunites Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens and draws inspiration from the reported Smurl family haunting. Here are 10 key facts, including where the film fits, what its story involves, its release history, UK content guidance and its reported opening-weekend box office.

1. It is the ninth film in the wider Conjuring universe

The film’s official site calls The Conjuring: Last Rites the ninth entry in the Conjuring universe. That count includes the spin-off films about Annabelle and The Nun, so it does not mean this is the ninth mainline film centered on Ed and Lorraine Warren. Regal’s 2025 marathon listed the eight earlier universe films before Last Rites. The official film site and Regal’s marathon announcement establish the distinction.

2. Michael Chaves directed the film

Michael Chaves is credited as director on the official film page, which also describes him as a franchise veteran.

3. James Wan and Peter Safran produced it

James Wan and Peter Safran are credited as producers. Wan also shares the story credit with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, according to the official credits.

4. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as the Warrens

Vera Farmiga plays Lorraine Warren and Patrick Wilson plays Ed Warren. The returning leads are joined by Mia Tomlinson as their daughter, Judy Warren, and Ben Hardy as Tony Spera, Judy’s boyfriend. These roles are listed on the official film page.

5. The case brings the Warrens’ family into the story

The official synopsis frames Ed and Lorraine’s return as “one last case” and brings Judy and Tony into the story. Warner Bros. Japan describes the setting as Pennsylvania in 1986, with supernatural events connected to a cursed mirror. “One last case” is the film’s promotional framing; it does not establish that the wider franchise cannot continue. See the official synopsis and Warner Bros. Japan’s announcement.

6. The reported Smurl haunting inspired the story

An About Amazon film explainer identifies the reported Smurl family haunting as inspiration for Last Rites. That identifies the story’s inspiration; it is not independent proof that supernatural events occurred as depicted.

7. The theatrical release began internationally before the North American date

The official film site lists September 3, 2025, as the start of the international release and September 5, 2025, for North America. Those are historical theatrical rollout dates, with the geography attached to each date; they are not current viewing options. The official release information supplies both dates.

8. Home-viewing dates differed by market and format

Home-viewing announcements were territory- and service-specific. Warner Bros. Discovery announced a global HBO Max streaming debut for November 21, 2025. Warner Bros. Japan announced later dates for Japan: digital sale on January 9, 2026; digital rental on February 13, 2026; and Blu-ray and DVD on March 4, 2026. These are past announced dates, not confirmation of present availability in every country or service.

Warner Bros. Japan also announced a nine-film Conjuring Universe Blu-ray collection for March 4, 2026. Check current local listings before choosing a service or disc: availability, retailer stock, region coding, language and edition can vary. A past platform announcement does not establish where the film is available now.

9. UK guidance lists intense horror content and an approximately 135-minute runtime

The BBFC’s UK record lists an approximately 135-minute runtime and advises viewers about strong horror and violence, including possession, jump scares, bloody imagery and injury detail. It also notes upsetting themes and scenes involving illness, bereavement and stillbirth. This is UK classification guidance, not a universal age rating or a substitute for another country’s local rating. Consult the BBFC entry for its full advice.

10. The reported opening-weekend figures are not lifetime totals

In its September 7, 2025, report, the Associated Press reported an $83 million domestic opening across 3,802 theaters and $104 million outside North America during the opening weekend. These are opening-weekend figures, separated by geography—not lifetime gross totals. The report quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “Audiences know when they go in to see ‘The Conjuring,’ the minute this scary, ominous music comes up with the Warner’s logo, you know you’re in for a wild ride.” Read the Associated Press report for the original context.
