After losing the opening challenge, Long faced his friend Derrick Kosinski in Pole Wrestle—and Kosinski won.
What happened to Mark Long in the opening elimination?
In the episode sequence reported by AOL’s reproduction of Sydney Bucksbaum’s Entertainment Weekly interview, the Era Invitational led to an elimination in which contestants from the same era faced one another before the eras competed against each other. Long lost the opening challenge and entered the Era 1 elimination.
Kosinski volunteered to face him. A random draw selected Pole Wrestle, and Kosinski defeated Long. Long said he and Kosinski had discussed the possibility before deliberation, and that he had given his friend his blessing.
Why did Long dislike the twist?
Long objected to the same-era matchup, not to a claim that the Pole Wrestle elimination itself was unfair. He said the contestants thought it was “the crappiest twist ever” because it put people who had been teammates against one another. He would have preferred a matchup across eras, which he imagined as “the old lion versus the new young lion.”

How did Long describe the Pole Wrestle match?
Long recalled that his forearms cramped and that he felt he had pulled his glute when the match began. He speculated that dehydration may have played a part. He also called his strategy poor and said Kosinski was especially suited to Pole Wrestle because of his compact build and experience. These are Long’s recollections and opinions from the interview, not independent medical findings or a verified assessment of the competitors’ abilities.
How did Long feel about leaving first?
Long said he was disappointed to go home first, but not crushed by the result. He described returning to the flagship show as a valuable experience, praised Kosinski, and said he hoped his friend would win. Long also said Kosinski’s victory felt like a win for him, given their close friendship and alliance.
