The five principal stars of Who’s the Boss? were Tony Danza, Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, Danny Pintauro and Katherine Helmond. The ABC sitcom ran from 1984 to 1992. Danza, Light, Milano and Pintauro went on to other work in television, film and theater; Helmond died in 2019. A planned sequel starring Danza and Milano was reported no longer in development in October 2024.
Who was in the cast of Who’s the Boss??
The sitcom followed Tony Micelli, a retired professional baseball player who takes a live-in housekeeping job with Angela Bower, an advertising executive. Tony moves into Angela’s home with his daughter Samantha; Angela’s son Jonathan and her mother, Mona Robinson, round out the household. Sony lists the series’ original run as 1984–1992. Sony’s series page
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Tony Danza | Tony Micelli |
| Judith Light | Angela Bower |
| Alyssa Milano | Samantha Micelli |
| Danny Pintauro | Jonathan Bower |
| Katherine Helmond | Mona Robinson |
The show’s premise turned conventional gender roles around: Tony did much of the cooking, cleaning and child care while Angela pursued her career. The Television Academy’s 2024 oral history also identifies the slow-building romantic tension between Tony and Angela as a central story, left unresolved in the original finale. Television Academy oral history, August 16, 2024
The same oral history reports that the sitcom reached more than 30 million viewers at its peak, ranked among television’s top ten from 1985 through 1989, and received ten Primetime Emmy nominations, winning one for lighting direction. These are historical figures reported by the Academy, not current audience or ratings numbers.

Why the show’s “boss” question mattered
The title’s question was more than a joke about who ran the household. In the Television Academy’s 2024 oral history, Light recalled: “‘Who’s the boss?’ was always the question every week. Sometimes it was Mona, sometimes it was Jonathan, sometimes it was Sam.” Director Asaad Kelada, who directed 117 episodes, put the premise this way: “It wasn’t that there was a conflict as to who was the boss; it was about what makes a boss.” Television Academy oral history, August 16, 2024
