The Case for Fixing Everything: Stewart Brand on Maintenance

Stewart Brand’s Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One treats upkeep as meaningful work. Lee Vinsel’s review weighs that idea against questions of labor, access, and what deserves to be maintained.

Stewart Brand’s Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One makes the case that caring for what already exists is consequential work, not merely a pause between moments of invention. Lee Vinsel’s review finds the book’s stories and enthusiasm compelling, but questions whether its focus on individual maintainers gives enough attention to shared systems, unequal labor, and the choice of what deserves to be maintained.

What does “fixing everything” mean?

In this book, maintenance extends beyond repairing a broken object. It includes the ongoing work that keeps technologies and systems usable: noticing wear, preserving function, and accepting responsibility for what people depend on. Stripe Press presents the volume as a broad exploration of maintenance and a call to rethink its meaning.

That framing gives maintenance moral weight. The review attributes to Brand the claim that “Taking responsibility for maintaining something—whether a motorcycle, a monument, or our planet—can be a radical act.” The quotation is presented here as it appears in Lee Vinsel’s review, rather than independently verified against the book.

What does the book cover?

Stripe Press describes a wide-ranging book that moves among sailboats, vehicles, weapons, precision manufacturing, manuals, military sustainment, and corrosion. The breadth is part of its appeal: maintenance is treated not as a niche repair skill, but as a feature of many technical settings.

Vinsel characterizes “The Maintenance Race” as a chapter about three sailors in the 1968 Golden Globe race and their contrasting approaches to upkeep. He describes “Vehicles (and Weapons)” as a much longer, digressive chapter. These are the reviewer’s descriptions of the book’s structure, not a neutral assessment of its organization.

Brand’s interest in tools and systems also has a longer context. Vinsel connects the maintenance argument to the Whole Earth Catalog and its motto, “Access to tools,” as well as to Brand’s earlier book How Buildings Learn: What Happens After They’re Built. Stripe Press identifies Brand as the creator and editor of the catalog and lists How Buildings Learn among his books.

What does Lee Vinsel find persuasive—and what does he question?

Vinsel finds Brand’s stories and evident enthusiasm engaging. He also sees a gap between the book’s celebration of maintenance and a fuller account of how maintenance actually works across institutions and communities. In his reading, the book leans toward the individual maintainer: the person with skills, tools, and a personal relationship to what is being kept in working order.

That emphasis raises questions the review says receive too little sustained attention:

  • Who performs the work? A celebration of repair can overlook unpaid or under-recognized labor and how its burdens are distributed.
  • Who has access? Tools and information matter, but so do the resources and authority needed to use them.
  • Which systems merit upkeep? Keeping something working is not automatically the right choice if the system causes harm or excludes people.
  • What makes maintenance collective? Infrastructure and institutions cannot be understood only through the habits of an individual craftsperson.

These are Vinsel’s critical judgments about the book, not findings independently established by the publisher’s description. He also questions whether the book’s episodes add up to a sufficiently coherent general argument. The review quotes Brand describing his approach as: “All I can offer here is to muse across a representative of maintenance domains and see what emerges.”

Why not simply fix everything?

Maintenance can preserve useful value, but preservation is not an end in itself. Vinsel’s review asks how to prioritize maintenance and raises the risk that keeping polluting infrastructure or inaccessible arrangements in service could delay necessary change. His examples point to a real tension in the book’s central idea: responsibility may mean repair, but it may also mean replacing or redesigning a system.

  • [Great Gift Choice] -This tool kit is easy to carry and stock. It is a good gift choice for men and women. Also this tool set is perfect for Father's Day, and is a great option as gift for Dad, Boyfriend & Brothers when chrismas.

That makes “fix everything” a provocation rather than a complete decision rule. A useful way to apply the argument is to ask:

  • What value does continued upkeep preserve?
  • Who benefits from the system staying in place, and who bears its costs?
  • Would repair reduce harm, or extend the life of a harmful arrangement?
  • Is transition feasible, and what would be lost if the system were abandoned?

These questions follow the trade-offs Vinsel identifies; they are not a formal framework or scorecard offered by the book.

Who should read the book?

Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One may appeal to readers curious about how care, repair, and technical systems shape ordinary life. Its range of examples offers entry points beyond conventional repair manuals, while Vinsel’s review helps readers see both the strength and the limits of Brand’s emphasis on personal responsibility.

Readers looking for a systematic account of maintenance labor, institutional responsibility, or the politics of infrastructure may find Vinsel’s critique especially relevant. The book is better approached as an expansive, exploratory meditation than as a definitive guide to deciding what society should maintain. For the book’s own description and retailer links, see Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One at Stripe Press. Vinsel’s review is reproduced by The CDO Times, which describes itself as a newsfeed without additional editorial review: Lee Vinsel’s review, “The case for fixing everything”.
