This follows the character’s broad story arc; it is not a complete chronological order for every Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Captain America movies in story order
- Captain America: The First Avenger — Steve Rogers’ story begins during World War II, before his later adventures in the modern era. Marvel’s broader MCU timeline places it before Iron Man 2. Marvel’s official MCU timeline guide gives the wider context.
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier — Steve is back in the modern era, where the story centers on S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel’s timeline listing places it after The First Avenger.
- Captain America: Civil War — The Avengers’ political conflict puts Steve at the center of the story. Marvel’s Phase Three guide notes that the film opens with a 1991 sequence in Siberia before moving to its present-day conflict. Read Marvel’s Phase Three guide.
- Captain America: Brave New World — This is a later Captain America-led story associated with Sam Wilson. Place it after the Steve Rogers-centered films for a character-focused watch; this sequence does not claim a precise full-MCU timeline placement for it.
Story order or release order?
Story order follows where the films fit in the characters’ lives; release order follows when audiences first saw them. The sequence above is a practical Captain America character-arc path, not a precise scene-by-scene chronology. For example, Civil War begins with a flashback, so its opening does not make the entire film earlier than the other entries.
If you want the complete MCU in story order, use Marvel’s official timeline guide rather than treating these four titles as the whole chronology. Marvel said its timeline book was developed with Marvel Studios and pointed readers to the timeline order on Disney+. The wider MCU sequence includes many films in which Captain America is not the lead.
Does the 1944 Captain America serial belong in the list?
No. The 1944 Captain America is a Republic Pictures serial, not a Marvel Studios MCU feature, so it does not belong in this watch order. Marvel’s retrospective says it debuted on February 5, 1944, ran for 15 weekly chapters—most about 15 minutes—and totaled about four hours. It is worth seeking out only as a separate piece of adaptation history. Marvel’s retrospective on the 1944 serial has more detail.

Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Where to watch
Marvel identifies Disney+ as a place to watch MCU titles, but availability varies by country and can change. Check your local Disney+ catalog for each film before planning a marathon. Marvel’s official Avengers: Endgame page also lists physical formats such as Blu-ray and 4K UHD, but check the contents and region of any collection before buying; a listed Avengers collection should not be assumed to include every Captain America film.
