Spoilers for all of Season 1, including Episode 8, “Protect the Family.” The finale brings Bruce, Charles, and Eileen closer, but it does not free them from the Sun family’s criminal world. Bruce refuses to become his father’s successor, Eileen claims power for herself, and Charles returns to Taiwan with her. A post-credits scene makes clear that the danger continues.
Why does Bruce shoot Big Sun?
Bruce confronts his father and shoots him to wound him, not to kill him. He wants Big Sun’s control to end and the authorities to take his father into custody, rather than stepping into the role of another family killer. Director Viet Nguyen described Bruce’s choice as defeating his father without killing him in a Salon interview.
It is a break from the future Big Sun offers him: Bruce will not inherit the family’s power on his father’s terms. But a nonlethal choice is not the same as a clean escape from the consequences of the family’s violence.
What happens to Eileen?
Eileen follows Big Sun to the hospital, disguises herself as a nurse, and alters his chart so he will receive insulin and remain unable to move or speak. Her action is revenge and a way to keep him from simply escaping the consequences of his actions, as explained in Netflix Tudum’s May 13, 2024 ending explainer.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The hospital scene also echoes an earlier visit, when Eileen tested whether Big Sun was truly in a coma. This time, rather than merely assessing his condition, she uses her position to shape his fate.
Eileen claims the Jade Dragons
Eileen plans to return to Taiwan and lead the Jade Dragons as Dragon Head. That ambition has been building throughout the series: she has long acted strategically to protect the family’s power, even while separated from Big Sun. In the finale, she stops working behind his authority and chooses to claim the empire herself.

Why does Charles go back to Taiwan?
Charles goes with Eileen rather than staying in California to pursue the bakery life he has begun to build. He has a bakery and has perfected his churro recipe, but he is not ready to leave the family’s world entirely. Co-creator Byron Wu told Salon that Charles is still unable to fully confront or escape his father’s influence.
His decision is also personal: after 15 years apart, he can reconnect with his mother and help her navigate Taiwan. He does not simply return to being Big Sun’s enforcer. His choice is to go with Eileen and remain connected to his brother, even though the family business still surrounds him.

Where does Bruce end up?
Bruce stays in the San Gabriel Valley. He returns to his improv troupe and drives away in the green Lamborghini, with a greater sense of independence than he had at the beginning of the season. While Charles and Eileen head to Taiwan, Bruce is the one who remains in California and tries to resume a life of his own.
What does the post-credits scene mean?
The post-credits scene shows Yuan, Big Sun’s No. 2, plotting a move connected to Frank Ma, a Triad informant whose testimony could threaten the other leaders. It keeps the wider criminal conflict unresolved; the scene establishes a continuing danger, not what happens next. Netflix’s explainer says creators Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk wanted the family’s reunion to feel happy while reminding viewers that “when you’re living as a gangster, you can never truly relax.”

What the finale says about family
“Protect the family” means different things to Big Sun and his children. For Big Sun, protection is bound up with control and obedience to the criminal organization. By the end, the others make distinct choices: Bruce refuses to become his father’s successor, Charles chooses to go with Eileen rather than turn against his brother, and Eileen takes power rather than remaining in Big Sun’s shadow.
The result is emotionally hopeful but not a safe or complete escape. The three Suns have chosen a closer bond, yet Charles and Eileen remain tied to the criminal world and the post-credits scene leaves its wider threat alive.
