Butcher kills Neuman after Ryan accidentally kills Grace Mallory, then takes the supe virus. Most of the Boys are captured or separated, while Annie/Starlight escapes. Stay through the closing credits: the bonus scene reveals that Soldier Boy is alive in cryogenic storage, but it does not reveal what Homelander will do about him.
What happens at the end of The Boys season 4?
The finale turns Sister Sage’s political strategy into reality. Neuman’s death is blamed on presidential candidate Robert Singer, allowing Calhoun to assume the presidency. Calhoun then announces martial law and the deputizing of superheroes. Homelander is directing power through that administration; he has not formally become president himself.

At the same time, the Boys’ internal and moral collapse accelerates. Ryan kills Grace Mallory during a panicked attempt to leave, and Butcher responds by embracing the violent presence represented by his hallucinated Joe Kessler. Butcher’s grotesque tentacle-like power emerges, he kills Neuman, and he takes the supe virus. That decision destroys the possibility of working with Neuman and advances the plan Sage had concealed from Homelander.
Why does Ryan kill Grace Mallory?
Mallory confronts Ryan with information about Homelander and his mother and tries to stop him from leaving. Ryan pushes her, and the force kills her. The scene shows a frightened teenager making a catastrophic choice; it does not establish that Ryan has permanently become a villain or irrevocably chosen Homelander.

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
Why does Butcher kill Victoria Neuman?
Butcher’s hallucinated Kessler has been urging him toward his most destructive instincts. In the finale, Butcher chooses that path. He unleashes his newly revealed power, kills Neuman and takes the supe virus rather than preserving the alliance the Boys had been attempting to build with her.
The act is both personal and strategic. Neuman’s death removes a potential political counterweight, gives Sage’s operation the opening it needed and leaves Butcher increasingly separated from the team. The episode suggests he could become an antagonist to the remaining Boys, but it does not literally settle that label.

How does Homelander’s takeover work?
Sage tells Homelander that she expected him to compromise the plan. Once Neuman is dead, the administration frames Singer, Calhoun takes office and martial law follows. The government’s decision to deputize superheroes gives Homelander control over a massive enforcement apparatus without requiring him to hold the presidency.
The distinction matters: the finale depicts Homelander exercising power through Calhoun and the new state of emergency, not being sworn in as president.
Rank #3
What happens to the Boys?
The team tries to scatter as the crackdown begins, but most members are captured or forced apart.
- Frenchie and Kimiko: Cate and Sam, introduced in Gen V, take part in their capture.
- Annie January/Starlight: Her powers return, and she escapes.
- Butcher: He leaves with the supe virus after killing Neuman, setting him on a path that may put him against the rest of the group.
- Ryan: He is left with the consequences of Mallory’s death, but the episode does not declare his final allegiance.
Is there a post-credits scene?
Yes. The reveal comes after the closing credits begin, so viewers should keep watching beyond the episode’s main ending.

Soldier Boy is alive
Calhoun takes Homelander to a restricted underground facility and shows him Soldier Boy suspended in cryogenic storage. Homelander had believed Soldier Boy was dead.
The discovery is especially charged because Soldier Boy is Homelander’s biological father, previously rejected Homelander and struck Ryan. The scene therefore connects a political victory to an intensely personal threat, but it stops before showing whether Homelander will free Soldier Boy, recruit him or kill him.

What Antony Starr’s reaction means
Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, called the moment “loaded” and said, “I don’t think the character should know.” That is an actor’s description of how he approached the reaction, not confirmation of a specific season 5 storyline. Homelander’s next move remains deliberately unresolved.

What the ending sets up for season 5
The finale leaves three conflicts running at once. Homelander now has state power and a supe-backed enforcement force. Butcher possesses the virus and has crossed a line that makes cooperation with the Boys uncertain. And Soldier Boy’s survival introduces a family confrontation neither Homelander nor the audience has seen resolved.
Those are setup points rather than predictions. The episode confirms the conditions, not the outcomes: it does not announce an alliance between Homelander and Soldier Boy, guarantee Butcher’s transformation into the final villain or prove that Ryan has joined Homelander.
