Which 2025 horror movie should you choose?
For the strongest critics-and-audience overlap: Sinners
Sinners is the most straightforward starting point if you want a film that leads both rankings. That overlap is useful, but it does not make the two lists equivalent: one reflects critics’ reviews and the other member ratings.
For fairy-tale body horror: The Ugly Stepsister
Choose The Ugly Stepsister if you want a familiar Cinderella framework turned into something gory and subversive. The available descriptions establish its body-horror angle, but do not provide a standardized gore or intensity rating.

For a disappearance mystery: Weapons
Weapons builds its central mystery around an unsettling event involving a school class. It also appears in both rankings, at #3 in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics guide and #5 in the reported Letterboxd list.

Companion puts an AI companion inside a twisted love story. It is the clearest match in this shortlist for viewers drawn to darkly comic or technology-centered horror.

For an animal-centered, emotional story: Good Boy
Good Boy follows a dog and its owner at a family home that has stood empty for a long time. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus emphasizes the film’s visual approach and emotional effect; the available description does not establish how frightening or intense it is.
Why critics’ and audience rankings differ
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide organizes films by Tomatometer rating categories and says its Certified Fresh selections have sustained high scores after reaching a sufficient number of critics’ reviews; its Fresh threshold is at least 60%. The guide is an aggregate view of critics’ reception, not an objective final canon. Rotten Tomatoes also notes that 2025 titles will leave the guide as new 2026 films are added, so the page is a changing snapshot rather than a permanent year-end record.

That approach captures audience ratings under specific inclusion rules; it is not directly interchangeable with a critics’ review aggregate.
For that audience ranking, the reported top five are Sinners, Obsession, The Plague, It Ends, and Weapons. Only Sinners and Weapons overlap with the five titles listed in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics guide above. A difference between lists is not necessarily a disagreement about quality: the sources use different raters, measures, and eligibility rules.

What counts as a 2025 horror movie?
Release-year labels can vary when festival screenings and first national releases fall in different years. The Letterboxd eligibility rules reported by GamesRadar count a 2025 festival screening as one route into its list, even when the first national release may differ. Check which convention a ranking uses before comparing its annual lists.
Release dates also help anchor a film to the year without creating a complete catalogue. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 release preview listed Clown in a Cornfield for May 9, Final Destination Bloodlines for May 16, Fear Street: Prom Queen and The Surrender for May 23, and Bring Her Back for May 30, 2025; it specified that The Surrender was on Shudder. The same preview listed HIM for September 19, The Strangers: Chapter 2 for September 26, Keeper for October 3, and Black Phone 2 for October 17, 2025. These are release-context examples, not a full worldwide calendar.

Streaming and rental availability depends on country and changes over time. Time Out’s October 15, 2025 list included selected US streaming and rental information, as well as some US and UK transactional options, but those listings are historical. Check a current service listing in your territory before choosing a film; an old availability entry should not be treated as confirmation that a title is still there.
