The Boys Creator Says Viewers Who Call It “Woke” Can Watch Something Else

“The Boys” creator and showrunner Eric Kripke has been open about the series having a political perspective—and comfortable with viewers switching off if they dislike it. His comments, reported by Gizmodo in June 2024, distinguish the show’s deliberate satire from the coincidental timing of its season-four election storyline alongside real U.S. political events.

What Eric Kripke said about viewers calling the show “woke”

In remarks from a Hollywood Reporter interview recounted by Cheryl Eddy for Gizmodo on June 7, 2024, Kripke said: “Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else.” He also said, “I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show.”

So the headline’s “doesn’t care” is a paraphrase, not a direct quotation. The reported comments show that Kripke was not apologizing for the series’ point of view or trying to win over viewers who objected to it. He also said he was surprised some viewers saw Homelander as the hero, adding: “The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them.”

Is The Boys political on purpose?

Yes: Kripke described its political perspective as intentional. He has framed the show as exploring the intersection of celebrity and authoritarianism, including how social media and entertainment can make fascism appealing. Gizmodo reported that recognizing how the series’ metaphor spoke to the moment made him feel an obligation to follow that direction, not that the show had suddenly acquired a political outlook.

The season-four story about a threatened presidential election landed amid anxiety around the 2024 U.S. election. Kripke described that overlap as a coincidence of timing, saying, “It’s odd to call it good luck, but sometimes we feel like we’re Satan’s writers room.” The distinction matters: the satire was deliberate; the precise resemblance between that fictional crisis and current events was not presented as a newly planned response to the election.

What is The Boys’ “agenda”?

“Agenda” is an interpretive label, not a neutral description of the show’s purpose. The series is a superhero satire based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The Associated Press describes it as following vigilantes confronting celebrity-like superheroes who abuse power and the Vought corporation that monetizes them, while satirizing capitalism and corruption alongside its gory action. In that context, examining power, celebrity, and authoritarianism is central to the show’s satirical approach, rather than a message concealed beneath a conventional superhero story. See the Associated Press report for its description of the series and source comic.

Kripke’s stated intent does not dictate how every viewer must interpret the series. Viewers can disagree with its politics, find its satire unpersuasive, or stop watching; the reported comments simply make clear that the showrunner acknowledged a perspective and was not shy about putting it on screen. In a separate report, GameSpot on June 20, 2024 attributed to Kripke a goal of pushing boundaries responsibly rather than catering to a culture that glorifies extremism.
