Dance Moms: The Reunion revisited old rivalries, painful exits and the cast’s complicated feelings about Abby Lee Miller. Its most striking moments were not a single consensus about what happened, but sharply different memories of the same years. Here is what participants said—and what the available reporting does and does not establish.
Who attended the reunion—and who did not?
Contemporary coverage reports that Chloe Lukasiak, Brooke and Paige Hyland, Kendall Vertes, Kalani Hilliker and JoJo Siwa attended, with mothers Kelly Hyland, Jill Vertes, Kira Girard and Jessalynn Siwa. Christi Lukasiak appeared remotely or through a message. Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler, Nia Sioux and Abby Lee Miller were absent. Entertainment Tonight’s recap covers the gathering and its discussion.
The reporting establishes who was missing, but not each absent cast member’s reason for not participating. It would be misleading to treat speculation during the special as an explanation from Maddie, Mackenzie or Nia themselves.
Why did the birthday gathering cause tension?
The night before filming, Paige, Brooke, Chloe and Kendall reportedly gathered at Maddie’s home for Paige’s birthday, alongside Maddie, Mackenzie and Nia. The recap says JoJo and Kalani had not been invited. At the reunion, participants questioned whether the gathering was meant to affect what people would say on camera.

Christi accused Melissa Ziegler of arranging the get-together to protect her daughters from criticism. That was Christi’s interpretation; the reporting does not independently establish Melissa’s motive. The distinction matters: the gathering is reported as an event, while claims about why it happened are allegations and opinions.
What did Chloe say about Abby and the Maddie rivalry?
Chloe said she had been reluctant to return because she was tired of being defined by the childhood rivalry with Maddie. She also reflected that Abby’s criticism had shaped how she saw herself, with effects she recognized years after filming. Those are Chloe’s recollections and understanding of her own experience, not a clinical assessment.

The reunion also touched on Chloe’s relationship with Brooklinn Khoury and her decision to make it public. Christi offered a supportive message. The moment placed a personal milestone alongside the discussion of how Chloe had been portrayed and treated during the show.
Why did Kelly feel guilty about the Hylands leaving?
Kelly connected her confrontation with Abby to Brooke and Paige’s departure from the show and dance company. She said she had carried guilt about the family’s exit. Brooke and Paige described the other side of leaving: it gave them opportunities for ordinary teenage experiences they had missed, including school dances and football games.

Their accounts are not mutually exclusive. Kelly described her retrospective sense of responsibility; her daughters described what life outside the show made possible for them.
Why did JoJo leave Dance Moms?
JoJo said a Nickelodeon deal meant she could not continue both opportunities. Jessalynn described worrying that Abby might undermine JoJo’s career and said the departure was her decision. These are the mother and daughter’s explanations as reported from the reunion, not a reason that should be generalized to other cast departures.

How did the cast feel about Abby Lee Miller?
The reunion revisited the cast’s response to learning that Abby had cancer and their long, difficult history with her. Their reactions differed. JoJo defended Abby’s strictness and said she had wanted to remain on the show; other participants spoke about harm, regret or reluctance to contact Abby.
There was no single cast-wide verdict. The accounts reflect different relationships with Abby and different ways of remembering the show. A participant’s recollection of personal impact is also distinct from another person’s interpretation of motive or from what a recap infers about the group.

What did Kalani share about her mental health?
The recap reports that Kalani discussed past suicidal thoughts, said the dance brought those feelings back, and mentioned calling 988 and receiving help. This is a sensitive personal disclosure, not medical guidance. Her experience should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a claim that the same response is appropriate for everyone.

Lifetime’s official viewing page lists the special on demand and in the Lifetime app, with TV-provider options for live viewing and unlocking content. Provider packages may vary, and availability can change.
There is also a listing distinction worth noting: Lifetime places The Reunion in its season 9 section and lists an episode runtime of 1 hour 21 minutes, while the broadcaster’s viewing article describes the reunion event as two hours. How to read the reunion’s revelations
- Separate memory from interpretation: Chloe, Kelly, Brooke, Paige and JoJo described their own experiences; accusations about someone else’s intentions remain attributed claims.
- Keep the timeline in view: the cast discussed events from filming years later, so the reunion presents retrospective accounts rather than contemporaneous records.
- Distinguish the program from the recap: the central points here are reported by contemporary secondary coverage, not an official transcript. Exact dialogue should not be presented as verified verbatim quotation without checking the episode.
- Do not infer absent cast members’ motives: coverage reports that Maddie, Mackenzie and Nia did not attend, but does not establish their individual reasons.
