During Big Brother 2 in 2001, contestant Justin Sebik held a carving knife to fellow houseguest Krista Stegall’s throat while they were kissing. Producers expelled him the following day. In 2002, Stegall sued CBS and production companies, alleging negligence. Contemporary reports establish that the lawsuit was filed, but the available record does not establish how it ended.

What happened between Justin Sebik and Krista Stegall?

In July 2001, Sebik held a knife to Stegall’s throat during a kiss inside the Big Brother 2 house, according to the Los Angeles Times’ contemporaneous report. The report said Sebik had previously been warned for physically intimidating other houseguests. Producers expelled him the next day.

Producer Arnold Shapiro said Sebik had “crossed the line of tolerable and acceptable behavior” and that producers had “no choice but to expel him,” the Times reported. Those were Shapiro’s comments about the production decision, not a court’s finding about responsibility.

The knife moment was not shown in the edited CBS episode, though viewers watching the live internet feed saw it, the Times reported. The episode following the incident drew about 9.1 million viewers, according to the same 2001 report; that figure is historical context, not evidence about the later lawsuit.

Did Krista Stegall sue CBS?

Yes. The Guardian reported that Stegall filed suit in New Orleans in late June 2002 against CBS, seeking unspecified damages. The reported complaint alleged that CBS should not have allowed Sebik onto the show because of his prior arrests. That history was part of Stegall’s allegation as reported at the time, not an adjudicated finding.

Contemporary coverage described additional claims about negligence and the production’s response after the incident. WAFB reported that the suit alleged inadequate counseling after the knife episode and sought unspecified damages, including medical expenses related to publicity surrounding it. A Reality TV World report summarizing The Daily Advertiser listed claims including pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical bills, mental impairment, and loss of enjoyment of life. These are reported allegations, not damages awarded by a court.

Stegall’s attorney, Clayton Burgess, told The Guardian, “I don’t think there’s any doubt [CBS] made a huge mistake letting him in and keeping him in.” CBS spokeswoman Nancy Carr responded, “We think there is no merit to this lawsuit and we are prepared to defend it vigorously.” The statements represent the positions of Stegall’s lawyer and CBS, respectively.

What happened to the lawsuit?

The final disposition is not established by the available contemporary reports. They confirm that Stegall filed suit and describe what she alleged, but do not show whether the case was dismissed, settled, tried, or otherwise concluded. There is no verified award of damages in those reports, so it would be inaccurate to say CBS was found liable or that Stegall received compensation.

Is the lawsuit about The Glass House the same case?

No. A separate 2012 case, CBS Broadcasting, Inc. v. American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., concerned CBS’s claims against ABC over the reality show The Glass House. CBS sought preliminary relief, which a federal court denied after finding its likelihood of success on the merits low at that stage. That dispute involved CBS as plaintiff and ABC as defendant; it is distinct from Stegall’s 2002 suit against CBS.
