The Best YouTube TV Alternatives to Avoid the Price Hike

Philo is the cheapest YouTube TV alternative, Sling is the best flexible budget replacement, and an antenna-plus-streaming setup offers the biggest savings. Hulu, Fubo, and DIRECTV can match more of YouTube TV's lineup but generally cost as much or more.

The cheapest YouTube TV alternative is Philo Essential at $25 per month, but it is not a like-for-like replacement because it does not target local broadcast channels or major sports. For a more credible lower-cost live-TV substitute, choose Sling—especially Sling Orange & Blue at $60.99 per month—and use an indoor antenna for local stations when reception is adequate.

Hulu + Live TV and Fubo are closer matches in some areas, but neither is reliably cheaper than YouTube TV at its regular $82.99 monthly price. The right choice depends on whether your household needs local channels, ESPN, regional sports, unlimited DVR, multiview, or simply a smaller entertainment bill.

This comparison uses regular U.S. monthly prices rather than temporary introductory offers. What YouTube TV costs now

YouTube TV’s main plan lists 100+ channels, local channels where available, unlimited DVR, multiview, six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams for $82.99 per month. Its official offer page also advertises $67.99 per month for the first three months for eligible new users, followed by the regular $82.99 rate. That introductory price should not be treated as the normal ongoing cost.

YouTube TV also advertises a separate Sports Plan at $54.99 per month for new users for 12 months, then $64.99 per month, subject to eligibility and the stated August 26, 2026 offer end date. That is a different, narrower offer—not a permanent reduction to the main YouTube TV plan.

The important distinction is between spending less and finding a like-for-like replacement. YouTube TV’s price includes features that cheaper services may not: local stations, ESPN, a broad national channel lineup, unlimited DVR, multiview, and household sharing. The right alternative depends on which of those features you actually use.

Quick comparison: YouTube TV alternatives

Service or setup Regular monthly price Difference from YouTube TV Best for Main compromise
Philo Essential $25 Save $57.99 Entertainment and lifestyle viewing No full local-channel or major-sports replacement
Philo Bundle+ $33 Save $49.99 Entertainment viewers who want included premium libraries Still not a YouTube TV sports or local-channel substitute
Sling Orange or Blue $45.99 Save about $37 Viewers willing to choose a smaller lineup Orange and Blue cover different channel priorities; locals vary
Sling Orange & Blue $60.99 Save about $22 Households wanting a more balanced sports, news, and entertainment mix Fewer channels and potentially fewer locals than YouTube TV
Indoor antenna plus targeted streaming Depends on subscriptions Potentially the greatest savings Local broadcasts and occasional streaming Not a replacement for cable networks or most subscription sports
Hulu + Live TV $89.99 $7 more Live TV bundled with Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN access Not cheaper at the regular price
Fubo Sports + News $55.99 after the introductory period Save about $27 A narrower sports-and-news package Only 28 channels; verify the sports you need
Fubo Pro $84.99 after the first-month promotion $2 more Sports-focused households wanting a broad lineup Not cheaper, with regional restrictions and blackouts
DIRECTV Entertainment $89.99 $7 more Traditional channel breadth Generally costs more, before taxes and fees

These are headline comparisons against YouTube TV’s $82.99 main-plan price. They do not include taxes, add-ons, separate sports subscriptions, the one-time cost of an antenna or streaming device, or the value of bundled services such as Disney+ and Hulu.

1. Philo: the cheapest option for entertainment-first households

Philo Essential is the best low-cost choice if you mainly watch lifestyle, reality, entertainment, and general-interest programming and do not need major live sports or local broadcast stations. It costs $25 per month and includes 70+ paid live channels, 100+ ad-supported free channels, on-demand programming, and up to one year of DVR storage.

Philo also offers a free-channel experience with 100+ ad-supported channels and no credit card requirement. That can be useful for testing the app and its general programming before paying for the Essential plan.

For $33 per month, Philo Bundle+ adds ad-supported AMC+ content plus access to HBO Max Basic with Ads and discovery+. That is still $49.99 less per month than YouTube TV’s regular price, but the bundle should be evaluated for the specific libraries you would otherwise pay for separately.

Choose Philo if:

  • Your priority is entertainment rather than live sports.
  • You do not depend on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, or local news through your TV provider.
  • You can use an antenna for local broadcasts or simply do not watch them.
  • You want a large DVR allowance at a much lower base price.

Do not choose Philo as a one-for-one YouTube TV replacement. The $57.99 monthly saving is real only if the channels and features you lose do not matter to your household. A sports fan who cancels YouTube TV and then adds separate sports subscriptions may erase much of that saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Sling TV: the best flexible lower-cost live-TV replacement

Sling is the clearest recommendation for reducing the bill while keeping a customizable live-TV service. Its main plans are Sling Orange at about $45.99 per month, Sling Blue at about $45.99, and Orange & Blue at about $60.99.

Sling Orange is oriented toward sports and family programming and includes ESPN, but it supports only one stream. Sling Blue is stronger for news and entertainment and supports three streams. Orange & Blue combines the two sides, lists 50+ channels, and supports up to four streams. It is the more credible Sling substitute for a household that wants both ESPN and a wider news-and-entertainment mix.

At $60.99, Orange & Blue saves about $22 per month—or approximately $264 over 12 months—against YouTube TV’s regular price before taxes, add-ons, and other costs. A single Orange or Blue plan saves about $37 per month, but the smaller lineup and different stream limits make the comparison less direct.

Sling also lists lower-cost Essentials and Select packages, including Select at $19.99 per month and an Essentials & Select bundle at $34.99. These can reduce the bill further, but they are much thinner substitutes for YouTube TV and should be considered curated streaming packages rather than full replacements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide between Sling’s plans

  • Pick Orange if ESPN and family programming matter most and one stream is sufficient.
  • Pick Blue if news, entertainment, and three simultaneous streams matter more than Orange’s sports-focused lineup.
  • Pick Orange & Blue if you need both groups and accept fewer total channels than YouTube TV.
  • Consider Select or Essentials only if you have already checked the exact channels you watch.

Local channels depend on your location and plan. Sling recommends using an over-the-air antenna when local stations are unavailable, but check your ZIP code before assuming that a particular station is included.

For households comparing plans, start with the current Sling TV plans and then price the add-ons you would actually need. Sling’s low base price can become less compelling after adding sports, news, DVR, or premium extras.

3. An antenna plus targeted streaming: the maximum-savings strategy

The cheapest realistic setup is often not another full live-TV bundle. It is an indoor TV antenna for receivable local broadcasts, combined with a low-cost service such as Philo or Sling and, where necessary, individual network subscriptions or free ad-supported streaming.

DAANT TV Antenna Indoor Long Range
  • Enjoy More Tv antenna for Local Channels: Get more channels by antenna for smart TV, receive local broadcasting, ABC, CBS, NBC, CPS, FOX, CW, ION, UMAS, etc.
  • HD Antenna for TV: Our digital TV antenna indoor adopts an upgraded Smart IC Chip, receives TV broadcasts including 4K, UHD and 1080 HDTV for the hd picture.
  • 16FT Coax Cable: Coaxial cable is composed of a solid center conductor, dielectric insulation, three aluminum shielding layers, and a durable outer layer. so that you will never lose signal or suffer distortion even in bad weather.
  • Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

An antenna can receive free over-the-air broadcasts from local stations when reception is adequate. Depending on your market, that may include ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and other broadcast stations. It does not replace national cable networks, ESPN, or most subscription sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reception depends on your distance from transmitters, terrain, building materials, nearby obstructions, antenna placement, and the specific local station map. Check reception for your address before buying, and be prepared to try a different placement. Do not rely on a package’s advertised range or channel count as a guarantee, and do not assume that “4K” labeling means you will receive 4K broadcast channels.

A practical antenna-based setup

  1. List your essential local stations. Include the network affiliates and local news stations your household actually watches.
  2. Check the signal map by ZIP code or address. Confirm that the stations are receivable from your home, not merely available somewhere in your metro area.
  3. Connect the antenna directly to the TV. A digital television normally has a coaxial antenna input; an older television may need a compatible converter box.
  4. Add only the service that fills the gaps. Philo may cover entertainment, while Sling may cover selected sports, news, and cable channels.
  5. Price occasional viewing separately. If you watch only one sport or network occasionally, an individual subscription may cost less than maintaining a full live-TV bundle.

This strategy is especially effective for households that mostly use local broadcast stations and a few entertainment channels. It is not appropriate for someone who expects one app to reproduce YouTube TV’s full lineup, DVR, multiview, and household-sharing features.

4. Hulu + Live TV: the best bundle substitute, not a cheaper one

Hulu + Live TV is a strong alternative when you value the included on-demand services, but it does not solve a price hike on its own. The ad-supported plan costs $89.99 per month after any applicable three-day trial—$7 more than YouTube TV’s regular $82.99 price.

The bundle includes Hulu, Disney+ with ads, ESPN access, 100+ live channels, local and national networks where available, and unlimited DVR. Hulu says live-TV recordings can be stored for up to nine months.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The calculation changes if you already pay separately for Hulu and Disney+. Consolidating those bills may make Hulu + Live TV a better overall value even though its live-TV sticker price is higher. Conversely, if you do not use the included libraries, paying more for the bundle is difficult to justify as a cost-cutting move.

Before switching, compare the exact local stations and sports coverage available in your market. Network availability, regional restrictions, and blackouts still apply.

5. Fubo: a sports-focused alternative that is not always cheaper

Fubo makes sense when its sports lineup matches your priorities, not simply because you want a lower bill. Its Sports + News plan is listed at $55.99 per month after the introductory period and includes 28 channels and ESPN Unlimited. That narrower package can be cheaper than YouTube TV, but it is not comparable in channel breadth.

Fubo’s standard Pro plan is listed at $84.99 per month after its first-month promotion. It lists 210 channels, local ABC, CBS, and FOX availability, local NBA, NHL, and MLB games where available, ESPN Unlimited, unlimited cloud DVR, and up to 10 screens. At the regular rate, Pro costs about $2 more per month than YouTube TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The higher tiers are also not budget options: Elite is listed at $94.99 after promotion and adds 4K, while Deluxe is listed at $114.99 after promotion and adds Sports Plus with NFL RedZone and other extras.

Fubo’s local sports availability is market-dependent. Regional sports networks, local games, and national channels can be subject to geographic restrictions and blackouts. A channel appearing in the national lineup does not guarantee access to every game in your area.

If the narrower package is enough, compare Fubo Sports + News directly with the channels you use before subscribing. If you need the broad Pro lineup, treat Fubo as a sports-oriented alternative with a slightly higher price—not as a way to avoid paying more.

6. DIRECTV streaming: broad traditional lineup at a higher price

DIRECTV streaming is for viewers who prioritize traditional channel breadth over monthly savings. Its listed packages are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Entertainment: $89.99 per month for 90+ channels.
  • Choice: $84.99 per month for 125+ channels.
  • Ultimate: $114.99 per month for 160+ channels.
  • Premier: $159.99 per month for 185+ channels.

Local channels are included where available, and taxes and fees apply. DIRECTV also advertises a five-day free trial for eligible streaming signups. Promotions can temporarily change the arithmetic, but the regular prices generally exceed YouTube TV’s $82.99 main-plan price.

Which alternative is closest to YouTube TV?

There is no universally best replacement. The services win for different reasons:

  • Closest on price while retaining customizable live TV: Sling Orange & Blue, especially with an antenna for locals.
  • Closest for entertainment at the lowest price: Philo Essential, if sports and locals are not required.
  • Closest for a live-TV and on-demand bundle: Hulu + Live TV, although its regular price is higher.
  • Closest for sports-specific needs: Fubo Sports + News or Pro, depending on the required channels and local rights.
  • Closest for traditional channel breadth: DIRECTV streaming, at a generally higher cost.
  • Lowest possible recurring bill: An antenna plus only the targeted streaming services you genuinely use.

  1. Write down the channels you watched during the last month. Separate local stations, sports, news, entertainment, and premium content.
  2. Mark the non-negotiables. A service that saves $50 but removes the one channel your household watches every week may not be cheaper in practice.
  3. Check local and regional sports availability by ZIP code. This is essential for broadcast affiliates and local NBA, NHL, and MLB games.
  4. Compare DVR and stream limits. YouTube TV includes unlimited DVR, six household accounts, and three streams. Sling’s limits vary by plan; Philo includes up to one year of DVR storage; Hulu includes unlimited DVR with recordings stored for up to nine months; Fubo lists unlimited cloud DVR and up to 10 screens on Pro.
  5. Add every required extra. Include sports packages, premium channels, separate network subscriptions, taxes, and any antenna or streaming-device purchase.

For reference, the headline annual differences from YouTube TV are approximately $695.88 for Philo Essential, $599.88 for Philo Bundle+, $444 for Sling Orange or Blue, and $264 for Sling Orange & Blue. Those figures are simple monthly-price differences multiplied by 12—not guarantees of total household savings.

Do you need a streaming device?

Most recent smart TVs can install streaming apps directly. If your television lacks the apps you need or has an inconvenient interface, a dedicated player can make a replacement setup easier. The Roku Streaming Stick 4K connects through HDMI and supports 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and free live channels. It is an accessory for accessing services—not a live-TV subscription and not a replacement for one.

Before purchasing one, check whether your TV already supports the Sling, Philo, Hulu, Fubo, and other apps you plan to use. A streaming device cannot improve antenna reception, remove sports blackouts, or provide paid channels without a subscription.

Bottom line

If your goal is the lowest bill, start with Philo Essential or an antenna-based setup. If you still need a flexible live-TV service with sports, news, or entertainment channels, Sling is the strongest budget recommendation; Orange & Blue is the safer starting point than either single plan for a mixed household. Choose Hulu + Live TV only if its included libraries justify the higher price, Fubo if its specific sports lineup is worth the cost, and DIRECTV if channel breadth matters more than savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before canceling YouTube TV, verify the exact local stations, sports rights, DVR rules, simultaneous streams, taxes, and regular post-promotion price for your ZIP code. That check is what separates a genuine saving from a cheaper subscription that forces you to buy the missing channels back.
