The trade-off is usually advertising, limited playback control, or missing features such as background play and offline listening. For a U.S. listener, the best choice depends on whether you want to pick specific songs, hear radio, find rare versions, or use music in a project.
Choose a free service for the way you listen
| Your priority | Good starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| General listening and playlists | Spotify Free | Ad-supported listening; free playback does not include the full Premium feature set. |
| Music videos, live performances, remixes, and unusual versions | YouTube Music | Its free tier includes on-demand songs and videos, but several mobile listening features are Premium benefits. |
| Hands-off, radio-style discovery | Pandora Free | Personalized stations are central; it is not unrestricted album-style listening. |
| Broadcast and local radio, news, and podcasts | iHeartRadio | Better suited to stations and spoken-word programming than precise on-demand song selection. |
| Independent, DJ, and niche uploads | SoundCloud or another creator-upload platform | Rights, regional access, and availability vary by track and uploader. |
| Music for a YouTube video | YouTube Audio Library | Production music and sound effects with displayed license and attribution terms—not a substitute for a mainstream listening catalog. |
| Mainstream music offline, without a subscription | No dependable permanent free option | Legitimate offline access is generally a paid or separately licensed feature. |
These are starting points, not guarantees that every song or feature is available in every country, app, device, or account type. Catalogs and playback rules can vary with regional licensing and service terms.
Spotify Free for everyday listening
Spotify points U.S. listeners to an ad-supported free service. It is a strong starting place for playlists and general discovery, but ads and playback restrictions distinguish Free from Premium. Spotify describes ad-free listening, offline access, lossless audio, and more playback control as Premium benefits: Spotify Premium.
YouTube Music for video and unusual versions
Google says its ad-supported YouTube Music tier includes on-demand playback for songs, music videos, and podcasts, along with queuing, repeat, unlimited skipping, Samples, and Music Tuner. Background play for music, ad-free listening, music downloads, and audio-only music playback are listed as Premium features. Availability can depend on region and account type, and some features are unavailable to supervised accounts. See Google’s free-tier feature details.

Pandora for stations that keep playing
Pandora Free is an ad-supported radio service built around personalized stations, not unrestricted selection of every song. Pandora says listeners can get some additional skips and Premium access by watching ads; paid tiers add features such as offline listening and more control. Check Pandora’s tier details for current rules.
iHeartRadio for live stations
iHeartRadio advertises free music, radio, and podcasts through its site and app. It is a sensible pick for broadcast stations, local programming, and spoken-word listening; specific stations and features may depend on the market. Its upgrade page describes the free and paid offerings.
SoundCloud and creator platforms for independent music
Creator-upload platforms can surface demos, DJ sets, remixes, and independent releases that are hard to find in mainstream catalogs. Use the official platform, and do not assume that a streamable upload is authorized for download, redistribution, public playback, or use in a video.

What “free music” actually means
Ad-supported streaming
On an official free tier, the platform makes listening available under its service model and may support it with advertising and other revenue. That is different from downloading an MP3 or obtaining permission to reuse a song elsewhere. The U.S. Copyright Office explains licensing mechanisms for digital music services, including blanket licensing for interactive streaming, in its Music Modernization Act FAQ.
Official artist and label uploads
Official artist channels, label accounts, and catalog listings are safer places to find authorized releases. A song appearing on a video or upload platform alone does not prove that the uploader had the rights, or grant you permission to download, remix, repost, or use it commercially.
Public domain and open licenses
Public-domain status can differ between a musical composition and a particular sound recording. Creative Commons licenses have specific terms; some require attribution, and some restrict commercial use or adaptations. “Royalty-free” describes a licensing arrangement, not necessarily a zero-cost or unrestricted one. A license to listen is not a synchronization license for adding a track to video.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Trials and promotions
A free trial or introductory offer is temporary, unlike a permanent ad-supported tier. Check the end date, renewal price, and cancellation terms before signing up. Student or bundled offers also have eligibility rules and should not be mistaken for a general free service.
What free tiers usually restrict
Free does not automatically mean ad-free, screen-off, downloadable, or available everywhere. Features can differ by service, country, device, app, playlist, and account type.
- Ads: Free listening commonly includes advertising; podcasts may also contain creator-read promotions.
- Playback control: Some services or modes emphasize stations or impose limits. Do not assume unlimited skips or album control unless the service states it for your account and device.
- Background play: Mobile screen-off listening may be reserved for a paid tier. YouTube Music lists background music playback among its Premium benefits.
- Offline listening: Mainstream music downloads are generally not a dependable permanent free feature. Paid-app downloads are typically account-controlled offline access, not ownership of an MP3.
- Audio quality and device support: Higher-quality playback and casting or other device features may vary by tier and platform.
For YouTube Music, Google’s Premium feature page lists ad-free music, background play, offline downloads, audio-only listening, and playback on supported Google Home or Chromecast Audio devices. Podcast advertising or creator-read promotions may still appear.

How to start safely
- Open the service’s official website or install its official app from your device’s app store.
- Create an account if the service requires one, and check country and age eligibility.
- Select the clearly identified free or ad-supported option; do not confuse a trial with an ongoing free tier.
- Search for an artist, album, station, playlist, or genre, then note whether the service is playing on demand, in radio mode, or through video.
- Review account, notification, and privacy settings. Use the official app or help pages if behavior differs between desktop and mobile.
- Avoid modified apps, browser extensions that bypass restrictions, and third-party downloaders.
How to spot unsafe or unauthorized offers
A service that says “free” is not automatically legitimate. Use these checks before entering account details or installing anything:
- Confirm you are on the official service domain or its genuine app-store listing.
- Look for a clear company identity, privacy information, and ordinary account controls.
- Be wary of sites promising to download any commercial song as an MP3, requiring a browser extension, or asking you to disable security software.
- For creator-uploaded tracks, look for an official artist, label, or other authorized account; a channel title saying “no copyright” is not proof of a license.
Research on illegal free-streaming services has documented security risks including deceptive advertising and malicious downloads; that does not mean every unauthorized site contains malware, but it is a reason not to treat an unknown download offer as safe. If a track disappears, possible explanations include a rights-holder request, licensing change, regional restriction, mistaken upload, or account restriction. Find an official listing rather than an unauthorized mirror. Do not use a VPN to bypass geographic limits; availability is governed by country-specific licensing and platform terms.
YouTube cautions that music labeled “free” by a user is not necessarily safe to reuse and may still trigger Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on free music and Content ID.

Use a separate license for videos, podcasts, and businesses
Personal streaming access is not a general-purpose music license. A song you can hear in an app is not automatically cleared for a video, podcast intro, livestream, advertisement, public event, store, or workplace sound system.
YouTube videos and other creator projects
YouTube’s Audio Library guidance identifies its own library as a copyright-safe source for music and sound effects within the described YouTube workflow. Sign in to YouTube Studio, open Audio library in the left menu, then search or filter by title, artist, genre, mood, duration, or attribution. If a Creative Commons track requires attribution, copy and use the displayed wording; for tracks without an attribution requirement, follow the displayed license terms. Keep a record of the track and its license details when you use it.
YouTube’s Creator Music is a separate creator-use offering, not a free personal listening service. YouTube says that beginning in August 2026 it is phasing out paid licenses and transitioning toward no-cost and revenue-sharing tracks; paid-license purchases could continue through August 10, 2026, while existing applied licenses remain valid until expiration. Check the current Creator Music terms and the live catalog before relying on a track.
Business and public playback
Playing music for customers, employees, or visitors is different from listening privately through headphones. Spotify says its ordinary service is for personal, non-commercial use and cannot be played publicly in businesses such as bars, restaurants, schools, stores, salons, or radio stations; it directs commercial users to Soundtrack. See Spotify’s public and commercial-use rules. Events, gyms, restaurants, and other public settings may require an appropriate business or public-performance service.

For a famous song in a monetized video, podcast, livestream, advertisement, or other project, obtain the rights needed for that use or choose music with a license that explicitly permits it. “Royalty-free” can still involve a purchase or subscription, attribution, limits on commercial use, client work, broadcasting, or redistribution. YouTube also explains monetization and commercial-use requirements; match the license to the platform and project rather than relying on a track title or uploader description.
