What were the best TV shows of the ’80s? This ranking favors series that combine strong craft and performances with influence, cultural reach, rewatchability, and a distinctive place in their genre. It is an argued recommendation, not an objective verdict: another list can reasonably put a different show at the top.
Here, “’80s shows” means scripted series that premiered from 1980 through 1989, including shows that continued into the next decade. Talk, quiz, variety, and nonfiction programs are outside the ranking, so this is a selection of the best scripted 1980s TV—not a complete account of the decade’s television.
What makes a show one of the best of the ’80s?
No single institution decides which series define a decade. A useful benchmark is Canon Archive’s consensus-style ranking, which says it draws on 13 lists and includes 17 shows. Its leading three are The Simpsons, Cheers, and Hill Street Blues, with The Golden Girls also among its leading entries. That order is a point of comparison, not a binding answer: the aggregation and a list limited to scripted shows use different scopes, and this ranking makes its own judgments.
The order below weighs five considerations together: craft and performances; influence on later television; cultural reach; durability or rewatchability; and how distinctly each show occupies its genre. These are editorial criteria, not a published scoring system. Awards help establish recognition, but they do not settle which series every viewer will consider best.

The best TV shows of the 1980s, ranked
-
The Simpsons (1989)
The strongest choice for the top spot because it represents television’s ability to make animation a durable form for scripted series rather than a narrow category. It also tops the Canon Archive aggregation. Its 1989 premiere makes it a late-decade entry, but the ranking is based on premiere year, not on whether a show’s run stayed inside the decade.
-
Cheers (1982)
A standout comedy and a strong alternative for first place: Canon Archive ranks it second, while the Television Academy records it as Outstanding Comedy Series for the 1983 awards. The Academy record is evidence of industry recognition, not proof that it outranks every other series. For viewers who want a complete physical collection, a specialist retailer has listed Cheers: The Complete Series on DVD; check the edition and current availability before buying.
-
Hill Street Blues (1981)
The highest-ranked drama in Canon Archive’s leading three, and a key choice for a list that should represent more than comedy. The Television Academy records it as Outstanding Drama Series in 1981. NBCUniversal reports 26 Emmy wins from 98 nominations over seven seasons, a substantial recognition record that supports its standing without turning awards into a substitute for judgment.

-
The Golden Girls (1985)
A leading entry in Canon Archive’s ranking and the opening choice on SlashFilm’s separate list of scripted 1980s shows. Its presence near the top across lists with different methods makes it a compelling pick here, too. The agreement is a useful signal, not a claim that any one ordering is definitive.

The Wonder Years (1988)
One of Canon Archive’s 17 selections and an important counterweight in a ranking otherwise led by major comedies and dramas. Its place here recognizes the value of a distinct scripted perspective within the decade’s television mix, rather than a claim about a measurable audience or influence ranking.
-
Murder, She Wrote (1984)
SlashFilm includes this mystery series among its best scripted shows of the 1980s. Its inclusion broadens a ranking that might otherwise treat the decade’s legacy as only sitcoms and prestige dramas. Mystery is a meaningful part of a decade-spanning list, even when the ranking has to make room for only a limited number of titles.

-
St. Elsewhere (1982)
Named among Canon Archive’s 17 shows, this series gives the ranking a medical-drama entry alongside police drama and comedy. Its placement reflects the importance of genre range in a decade-wide selection, rather than an unsupported claim that it was the decade’s most watched or most awarded medical series.
-
Moonlighting (1985)
Another Canon Archive selection, and a distinctive entry in a list that includes both established genres and shows with a less conventional profile. Its place here recognizes that a strong decade ranking should not reduce television history to award winners alone.

Murphy Brown (1988)
Canon Archive includes the series among its 17 entries. It earns a place in this ranking as a late-decade scripted comedy, helping the list represent more than shows that premiered at the start or middle of the 1980s.

-
Cagney & Lacey (1981)
The Television Academy records it as Outstanding Drama Series for the 1985 awards. Actor Tyne Daly, who starred as police detective Mary Beth Lacey, described the series’ central achievement this way: “For six seasons, CBS turned over a very expensive hour of television to a drama that centered on women. The series showed that you could sell advertising time with stories about women.” That perspective makes it a particularly valuable inclusion in a ranking attentive to what a show made possible as well as how it was recognized.
-
Only Fools and Horses (1981)
Canon Archive includes this British series, a reminder that the decade’s television is not exclusively American. It ranks below the top ten here, but its inclusion keeps the selection from treating US programming as the whole of the 1980s scripted-TV canon.
-
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988)
Canon Archive names it among its 17 selections. Its place rounds out a list that would otherwise be dominated by conventional comedy and drama categories, while recognizing that distinctiveness is one of the qualities that can make a series memorable.

Why do published rankings disagree?
The lists use different definitions and methods. Canon Archive describes its ranking as an aggregation of 13 lists, while SlashFilm’s June 15, 2026, list explicitly focuses on scripted shows and treats talk and nonfiction programming elsewhere. SlashFilm opens with Murder, She Wrote and The Golden Girls; Canon Archive places The Simpsons, Cheers, and Hill Street Blues first through third. Those differences are not a contradiction that can be resolved by calling one list objective: they reflect distinct editorial choices.
Awards provide another perspective, but only when the award year and category are stated precisely. The Television Academy records Taxi as Outstanding Comedy Series and Lou Grant as Outstanding Drama Series for the 1980 awards; it records The Cosby Show as Outstanding Comedy Series and Cagney & Lacey as Outstanding Drama Series for 1985. Those records measure recognition in particular categories and award years, not an all-purpose ranking of the decade.
Which 1980s shows still hold up?
“Still hold up” depends on what a viewer wants from a series: comedy, drama, mystery, or a different kind of television altogether. The selections above offer a practical starting point across scripted genres. If you want a broader television history that includes talk, quiz, variety, children’s, or nonfiction programs, this ranking intentionally does not settle that question; those categories require their own criteria rather than being squeezed into a scripted-series list.
Where to watch any of these shows depends on territory and changes over time. The ranking does not establish current streaming availability, so check services in your region for the specific title and season.
