Adolescence is the strongest overall pick among the best TV shows released in the United States during the first half of 2025, with The Pitt, Severance season 2, Andor season 2, and The Studio forming the clearest consensus shortlist behind it. Together, they cover the year’s most compelling limited drama, medical drama, science-fiction thriller, franchise series, and comedy.

For this article, “2025 so far” means television released in the U.S. between January 1 and June 30, 2025. The list includes both new programs and returning seasons that aired new episodes during that window. That is broader than Metacritic’s midyear list, which focuses on first-year series, limited series, and specials that debuted during the first half of the year.

Quick list: the five best shows to start with

  1. Adolescence — the best complete limited series and the year’s boldest formal achievement.
  2. The Pitt — the best medical drama, built around the pressure and exhaustion of an emergency room.
  3. Severance season 2 — the best science-fiction thriller for viewers who enjoy elaborate mysteries.
  4. Andor season 2 — the best franchise drama and one of television’s strongest political thrillers.
  5. The Studio — the best comedy, with fast Hollywood satire and unusually ambitious direction.

The ranking below is an editorial synthesis of repeated appearances on midyear critics’ lists, review aggregation, awards visibility, and distinctive creative achievement. It is not an objective measurement, and no show will suit every viewer.

The 10 best TV shows of 2025 so far

1. Adolescence — best limited series

Genre: Crime drama / limited series
U.S. platform: Netflix
Best for: Viewers looking for a short, serious, conversation-starting drama.

Netflix’s four-part limited series begins with the arrest of a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate. It then follows the consequences through his family, the investigators, and the therapist assigned to him. The crime premise is accessible, but the series is far more interested in what happens around the arrest: adolescent male rage, online influence, family responsibility, and the ways schools, police, and mental-health professionals respond to a crisis.

Its defining formal decision is that every episode was filmed as one continuous shot. The technique is not merely a visual stunt. It keeps the viewer trapped inside the same accumulating pressure as the characters, with no conventional edit to provide relief or skip over difficult transitions. Movement through homes, schools, police stations, and institutions becomes part of the storytelling.

Adolescence was among the highest-scoring new shows on Metacritic’s first-half list and later became a major 2025 Emmy success, receiving eight awards including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, writing, directing, and acting honors. Those accolades reinforce its importance, but the central reason to watch is its unusually controlled combination of form and subject.

Content note: murder, teen violence, distressing subject matter, and discussions of online misogyny and radicalization. This is an intense watch, not casual background television.

2. The Pitt — best medical drama

Genre: Medical workplace drama
U.S. platform: Max
Best for: Viewers who want a propulsive weekly drama grounded in workplace pressure.

The Pitt uses the emergency room clock as its main engine. Rather than building every episode around a puzzle or a sensational twist, it creates urgency from the continuous arrival of patients, limited resources, difficult decisions, institutional hierarchy, and the physical exhaustion of staff who must keep working after emotionally punishing cases.

The real-time structure gives the show a strong procedural surface: patients arrive, diagnoses change, and decisions must be made quickly. Beneath that, the ensemble gives different narrative weight to nurses, residents, attending physicians, patients, and families. The result is a drama about medicine as a system and a workplace, not simply about brilliant doctors solving cases.

Critics at The Ringer and RogerEbert.com repeatedly identified The Pitt as one of the defining shows of the first half of the year. Its balance of realism, dark humor, professional hierarchy, and moral pressure makes it a particularly easy recommendation for viewers who want prestige drama that remains immediately watchable.

3. Severance season 2 — best science-fiction thriller

Genre: Science fiction / mystery thriller
U.S. platform: Apple TV+
Best for: Existing season-one viewers and anyone who enjoys serialized mysteries, workplace satire, and meticulous production design.

The second season continues the premise that Lumon employees have undergone a procedure separating their work memories from their personal memories. Mark and his colleagues now have to deal with the consequences of that division while confronting increasingly disturbing information about Lumon and the system that governs their lives.

Apple released the 10-episode season globally from January 17 through March 21, 2025, with episodes arriving weekly. The show remains unusually good at turning office architecture, corporate language, ritualized behavior, and management jargon into sources of dread. Its production design is precise, its central performances remain compelling, and its mysteries are constructed to reward conversation between episodes.

The caveat is that season two is not a standalone entry. It assumes familiarity with the first season and is more interested in expanding the mystery than resolving every question immediately. Viewers who need quick answers may find the pacing frustrating; viewers who enjoy theories and long-form world-building will likely find it essential.

The Television Academy’s 77th Emmy nominations listed Severance as the leading program with 27 nominations, an awards signal that matches its prominent place in midyear critics’ coverage.

4. Andor season 2 — best franchise drama

Genre: Political thriller / science fiction drama
U.S. platform: Disney+
Best for: Star Wars viewers seeking grounded political storytelling, and non-fans willing to begin with season one.

Andor season 2 launched with a three-episode premiere in April and continued through additional three-episode releases in May. Its structure gives the final season room to move through several stages of the rebellion while developing the personal, political, and institutional pressures shaping its characters.

The series works because it treats the Star Wars setting as a framework for an adult political thriller rather than as a substitute for one. Espionage, surveillance, colonial power, resistance politics, compromise, and anti-authoritarian organizing receive sustained attention. Supporting characters are not decorative additions to a familiar universe; their choices show how large political movements are built from fear, sacrifice, bureaucracy, and conflicting motives.

Critics’ midyear lists repeatedly placed the season among 2025’s strongest television. It is a particularly persuasive example of franchise television that can be politically textured and morally complicated without losing control of its larger story. Start with season one if you have not watched it; season two is not designed as an introduction.

5. The Studio — best comedy

Genre: Workplace comedy / Hollywood satire
U.S. platform: Apple TV+
Best for: Viewers who enjoy fast comedy, show-business satire, celebrity cameos, and ambitious single-shot scenes.

Seth Rogen plays the newly appointed head of Continental Studios, an executive caught between corporate demands and the creative ambitions of filmmakers. The setup gives the series a steady supply of material: prestige branding, celebrity behavior, artificial-intelligence anxiety, labor disruption, test screenings, franchise logic, and the commercial pressures that shape what gets made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Studio is especially effective when its characters try to appear principled while negotiating with money, status, and fear. TIME highlighted its pace, guest appearances, and formal ambition, including an episode built around filming a single-shot scene. The style is energetic without making the industry setting inaccessible; you can enjoy the jokes even when you do not recognize every insider reference.

It is the clearest starting point for viewers who want comedy rather than a heavy drama, and it makes a useful companion to the more serious industry and workplace shows elsewhere on this list.

6. The White Lotus season 3 — best ensemble satire

Genre: Dark comedy / ensemble drama
U.S. platform: Max
Best for: Viewers who like morally messy characters, resort settings, social satire, and post-episode arguments.

The third season takes the anthology to Thailand, where wealthy guests and resort employees once again expose the tensions beneath luxury. The season examines privilege, spiritual tourism, status, social cruelty, and the gap between the way people describe themselves and the way they behave when comfort or reputation is threatened.

Its performances, setting, dialogue, and willingness to let storylines become uncomfortable remain strong reasons to watch. It is also less uniformly acclaimed than the top five. The slower pace, controversial storylines, and finale divided critics, making its position more dependent on taste than the ranking suggests.

New viewers can begin with season three because the anthology changes its main cast and setting, although the earlier seasons provide useful context for the show’s recurring interest in wealth, service, desire, and power.

Content note: mature themes, sexual content, substance use, disturbing situations, and violence.

7. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light — best historical drama

Genre: Historical political drama
U.S. availability: PBS/BBC-related distribution varies by market and service
Best for: Viewers who prefer literary dialogue, controlled performances, Tudor politics, and psychological tension over spectacle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The continuation of the Thomas Cromwell story returns Mark Rylance to the central role. Cromwell’s rise under Henry VIII has made him powerful, but power in this court is also a form of exposure. The season focuses on vulnerability, language, performance, political calculation, and the danger of becoming indispensable to a volatile ruler.

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is the most demanding recommendation here. It assumes familiarity with the first Wolf Hall installment and rewards viewers who are comfortable with dense political relationships and dialogue that carries more meaning than the characters state directly. In return, it offers a rare historical drama that trusts performance and psychological detail more than spectacle.

TIME included the series among the best shows of the first half of 2025. Begin with the earlier installment rather than trying to reconstruct Cromwell’s history while watching season two.

8. The Last of Us season 2 — best large-scale adaptation

Genre: Post-apocalyptic drama / video-game adaptation
U.S. platform: Max
Best for: Viewers who want ambitious production, emotionally consequential adaptation choices, and stories about grief, loyalty, and revenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The second season expands the post-apocalyptic world while continuing to explore the cost of violence and the ways grief can reshape a person’s moral boundaries. Its scale is substantial, but its most important choices remain character-driven: who is owed justice, what loyalty demands, and how revenge changes the people pursuing it.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

It was one of the period’s most visible dramas and received 16 nominations in the Television Academy’s 2025 program totals. At the same time, its structure is intentionally more divisive and less self-contained than season one. That is not a reason to omit it; it is a reason to set expectations. Viewers looking for the compact emotional arc of the first season may find the second more sprawling and unsettled.

Content note: graphic violence, death, grief, threatening situations, and emotionally difficult material. Watching season one first is essential.

9. Hacks season 4 — best veteran comedy

Genre: Character comedy / show-business satire
U.S. platform: Max
Best for: Viewers who want sharp performances, generational conflict, ambition, and emotional comedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fourth season continues the relationship between veteran comedian Deborah Vance and writer Ava, preserving the show’s central tension between mentorship, exploitation, affection, and competition. Its show-business setting supports jokes about career reinvention and professional insecurity, but the series works best when the comedy gives way to the characters’ fear of becoming irrelevant or replaceable.

Hacks belongs on a first-half list because it has maintained the unusually difficult balance between entertainment-industry satire and genuine character development. The Television Academy’s 2025 totals gave it 14 nominations, providing a substantial awards signal alongside its continuing critical reputation.

This is not the place to start the series. Watch the earlier seasons first so that the changing power relationship between Deborah and Ava has its full emotional effect.

10. Paradise — best high-concept mystery alternative

Genre: Speculative thriller / political mystery
U.S. platform: Hulu
Best for: Viewers who enjoy contained communities, conspiracy stories, speculative premises, and escalating revelations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paradise is the recommendation for readers who have finished Severance and want something more overtly plot-driven. Its enclosed social order and political mystery create a setting where information is power, relationships are difficult to interpret, and each revelation changes the apparent meaning of what came before.

The show appeared in critical discussions as a standout genre series because it understands the pleasure of a carefully managed reveal. It is best approached with minimal advance information, so avoid searching for explanations before watching. The series is less formally daring than Adolescence and less broadly established than the top returning shows, but its escalating structure makes it an effective alternative for mystery-first viewers.

How the list is divided: new shows versus returning seasons

A common source of confusion in “best of the year so far” lists is that different publications use different rules. Metacritic’s midyear methodology emphasizes new, first-year television, including limited series and specials. A broader viewing guide can also include returning seasons that aired new episodes in the first half of 2025.

New or first-year series Returning or continuing series
Adolescence Severance season 2
The Pitt Andor season 2
The Studio The White Lotus season 3
Paradise Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light
The Last of Us season 2
Hacks season 4

The categories are useful, but they should not be treated as a quality hierarchy. A returning season can be better television than a new series, while a limited series can deliver a more complete experience simply because its story has a defined endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should you start?

  • For a complete short watch: Choose Adolescence. Its four episodes tell a contained story, although the subject matter is difficult.
  • For a weekly workplace drama: Choose The Pitt. Its emergency-room setting creates immediate stakes without requiring a complicated mythology.
  • For comedy: Choose The Studio if you want Hollywood satire, or Hacks if you prefer an established character relationship and a longer emotional history.
  • For science fiction: Choose Severance, beginning with season one. Pick Paradise if you want a more direct mystery.
  • For franchise television: Choose Andor, but watch season one first. It is the strongest choice here if you want political drama rather than familiar franchise spectacle.
  • For history and politics: Choose Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light after watching the first series.
  • For an ensemble conversation starter: Choose The White Lotus season 3, especially if you enjoy arguing about characters’ motives after each episode.

How to watch these shows in the U.S.

The recommendations are spread across Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Max, Hulu, and PBS/BBC-related distribution. No single subscription automatically includes the entire list, and streaming catalogs, regional rights, episode availability, and prices can change. Verify the current U.S. home for each show before publication or purchase.

If your television does not support every required app, a TV streaming device can provide access to commonly used streaming services through a compatible HDMI-equipped screen. The device itself does not include Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Max, Hulu, or any other subscription, so treat it as a way to access services you separately pay for. Apple documents support for its TV app across smart televisions, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, game consoles, and other devices; compatibility should still be checked for the specific model and television.

How strong is the consensus?

The clearest cross-source consensus is around Adolescence, The Pitt, Severance, Andor, and The Studio. They appeared repeatedly in midyear critics’ coverage and combine strong reception with a clear creative identity.

The second group is more taste-dependent. The White Lotus season 3 divides viewers through its pacing and storylines; Wolf Hall demands patience and prior knowledge; The Last of Us season 2 makes adaptation choices that are likely to provoke disagreement; Hacks depends on investment in earlier seasons; and Paradise is aimed at viewers who prioritize plot and revelation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Critics’ lists from The Ringer, TIME, RogerEbert.com, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and The A.V. Club do not use identical inclusion rules or judging standards. Awards nominations provide another useful signal—Severance led the Television Academy’s 2025 program totals with 27 nominations, followed by 16 for The Last of Us and 14 for Hacks—but nominations are evidence of industry recognition, not proof of objective quality.

That distinction matters. The safest conclusion is not that one show is universally the best, but that Adolescence is the strongest consensus pick for a complete and formally distinctive drama, while the best choice for an individual viewer depends on whether they want medical realism, science fiction, political television, comedy, history, or a mystery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this list include returning TV seasons?

Yes. The scope covers U.S. television released from January 1 through June 30, 2025, including both new series and returning seasons that aired new episodes during that period. This differs from narrower midyear lists, such as Metacritic’s, that focus on first-year shows, limited series, and specials.

What is the best short, completed show on the list?

Adolescence is the best short watch: it is a four-part limited series with a defined story and a distinctive one-continuous-shot approach. It includes murder, teen violence, and distressing subject matter, so it is not light viewing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to watch earlier seasons first?

Yes for Severance season 2, Andor season 2, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, The Last of Us season 2, and Hacks season 4. The White Lotus season 3 can be watched independently because it is an anthology, although earlier seasons add context. Adolescence, The Pitt, The Studio, and Paradise are the easiest standalone starting points.

Are these shows available on one streaming service?

No. The list spans Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Max, Hulu, and PBS/BBC-related distribution. U.S. rights and episode availability can change, so check the relevant service immediately before watching. A streaming device may help access multiple apps, but it does not include the subscriptions.

The Bottom Line

Start with Adolescence for the year’s most complete and formally daring drama, The Pitt for the best accessible workplace series, Severance for science fiction, Andor for franchise television, and The Studio for comedy. The remaining five are excellent choices for more specific tastes: ensemble satire, Tudor politics, post-apocalyptic drama, veteran comedy, and high-concept mystery.
