Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato ranking put House of the Dragon first, its separate season-focused list put The Bear first, IMDb’s popularity list chose Stranger Things, and the Emmys recognized different shows by category. Here’s what each result means—and which titles are worth considering if you want a standout series from the year.
Which series was the best of 2022?
If “best” means Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ review aggregation, the answer is House of the Dragon: Season 1. If you mean the top show on Rotten Tomatoes’ separate list of Certified Fresh seasons, it is The Bear: Season 1. IMDb’s answer, based on popularity rather than reviews, is Stranger Things. The Emmy results offer category-specific choices: The White Lotus led total wins, while Succession and Ted Lasso won the drama and comedy series awards.
These lists are not contradictory: they measure different things, and they do not all rank the same kind of entry. Some focus on a season, one tracks audience interest through page views, and the Emmys award work in defined categories.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ ranking: House of the Dragon
Rotten Tomatoes’ 2022 Golden Tomato order is based on Tomatometer scores as of December 31, 2022, adjusted with a formula intended to account for differences in review counts. It is an aggregation of critics’ reviews, not one critic’s personal list. See Rotten Tomatoes’ Best TV Series of 2022 ranking.

- House of the Dragon: Season 1
- Andor: Season 1
- Ms. Marvel: Season 1
- Better Call Saul: Season 6
- Atlanta: Season 4
- The Bear: Season 1
For viewers who want a tense, politically minded science-fiction series, Andor is a notable alternative near the top of the ranking. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus called it “an exceptionally mature and political entry into the Star Wars mythos — and one of the best yet.”
Best-reviewed seasons: The Bear and Heartstopper
Rotten Tomatoes published a separate year-end list of TV and streaming shows that debuted new seasons in 2022 and were Certified Fresh. In that season-focused list, The Bear: Season 1 ranked first, with a 100% Tomatometer score from 72 critic reviews. Heartstopper: Season 1 followed, also at 100%, from 55 critic reviews. Those figures are the scores and review counts reported in the list updated December 30, 2022; they describe critics’ reviews, not audience ratings.

Rotten Tomatoes says a season qualifies as Certified Fresh with a score of at least 75% and at least 20 critic reviews, including five from Top Critics. The site says a season keeps the designation if its score later declines, as long as it remains at or above 70%. Read the Certified Fresh season list and criteria.
Most popular series: Stranger Things
IMDb named Stranger Things its most popular TV and streaming series of 2022. Its list covers shows that released new episodes during the year and consistently ranked highly in IMDbPro’s weekly TV rankings, which are based on page views. It measures interest on IMDb, not which series critics rated highest or which show had the most viewers overall. IMDb said its method drew on page views from more than 200 million monthly visitors; that is the audience scale cited for the method, not a viewer count for any individual title.

- Want a highly rated first season? Consider The Bear or Heartstopper, tied at 100% in Rotten Tomatoes’ reported figures but with different review counts.
- Want the year’s most popular title by IMDb’s measure? Choose Stranger Things; its position reflects page-view rankings.
- Prefer awards recognition? The Emmy results point to The White Lotus for total wins, or to Succession and Ted Lasso for the drama and comedy series prizes.
