For a historically grounded shortlist, start with the creators who defined TikTok’s 2022 follower rankings, then choose by the kind of video you want to watch: comedy, dance, music, food, commentary, or science. This is a guide to notable creators in 2022—not a current ranking or an objective score of who was “best.” TikTok’s year-end recap is useful for discovering creators by subject and geography, but it reflects the platform’s own editorial choices.
Who were TikTok’s biggest stars in 2022?
Khaby Lame’s rise past Charli D’Amelio was the year’s defining follower-count story. Guinness World Records reported on 23 June 2022 that Lame had 142.8 million followers and had overtaken D’Amelio, who had held the record since March 2020. That is a dated report, not a current count. Guinness World Records’ account of Lame’s record
At VidCon, D’Amelio welcomed the change: “I had No. 1 for two years. It’s time for someone else to have that spot, and I’m proud of him. He’s a friend, and there’s no bad blood,” she said, according to TechCrunch’s June 2022 report. TechCrunch put Lame at 142.7 million in its story, while Guinness reported 142.8 million. The small difference is best understood as two contemporaneous published snapshots, not a single figure to combine.
A June 2022 list from The National also included Bella Poarch, Addison Rae, Will Smith, and Zach King among its ten most-followed TikTok accounts. Its figures describe that month’s snapshot only; follower totals change, and the ranking says nothing by itself about which creator a viewer will enjoy. See The National’s June 2022 list.

Which TikTok creators fit your interests?
Reach is one way to find a creator; content and perspective are better guides to personal fit. TikTok’s own 2022 year-end retrospective named creators across subjects and regions. These are platform-curated examples, not an independent ranking.
| Creator | Why to watch | Format and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Khaby Lame | His signature videos parody needlessly complicated “life hacks.” Guinness described him as a silent comedian; Lame told Forbes, “I speak a universal language that everyone understands,” as quoted by Guinness. | Visual comedy with little spoken language; an approachable pick if you enjoy concise, expressive reactions. |
| Charli D’Amelio | One of TikTok’s defining dance creators and, until Lame passed her in June 2022, its most-followed account. | Dance and performance; a natural choice for viewers interested in choreography and creator-led trends. |
| Bella Poarch | Known for performance-led videos; TikTok’s 2022 recap noted that she released her debut EP that year. | Music and short-form performance; useful for viewers who want to see the overlap between TikTok and music careers. |
| Zach King | Recognized for visual illusions and edited trick videos in The National’s June 2022 creator list. | Visual effects and short narrative surprises; the format relies more on editing and imagery than commentary. |
| Drew Afualo | TikTok’s US recap included her among its creator examples. | Commentary and personality-led videos; a different lane from dance or visual spectacle. |
| CZN Burak and Bayashi | Food creators highlighted in the 2022 discovery landscape; TikTok’s global recap named Bayashi. | Food-focused videos, suited to viewers drawn to cooking and food presentation. TikTok also described discovery communities such as FoodTok. |
| Samantha Cristoforetti | TikTok’s global retrospective named the ESA astronaut among its creator examples. | Space and science from an astronaut’s perspective; a distinctive option beyond entertainment trends. |
| Dylan Mulvaney | TikTok reported that her “Days of Girlhood” series passed one billion views in 2022. | A serialized personal journey and commentary. The view total is TikTok’s own reported figure, not an independently audited count. |
| Jaeden Gomez and Kara Leigh Cannella | The dance duo appeared in TikTok’s US year-end examples. | Dance and collaboration, for viewers who prefer creator partnerships and choreography. |
| Luva de Pedreiro | Named in TikTok’s global 2022 recap. | Sports-oriented creator content; a pick for viewers looking beyond dance, comedy, and food. |
Why “best” depends on what you want to watch
A follower ranking can answer who had the largest audience at a particular moment; it cannot tell you whether a creator’s style or subject suits you. TikTok’s 2022 recap pointed to communities including BookTok, CarTok, FoodTok, and MuseumTok, showing how discovery extended well beyond the biggest entertainment accounts. For a quick choice, start with the format: visual comedy if you want language-light humor, dance for choreography, music for performance, food for cooking and presentation, commentary for personality-led viewpoints, or science and sports for a subject-led feed.

One other example of the platform’s scale in 2022: TikTok said US users made 8.9 million videos using “Sunroof” by Nicky Youre & dazy. That platform-reported figure illustrates how music could become a shared video prompt; it is not a measure of any one creator’s popularity. TikTok’s year-end recap
