The film leads Rotten Tomatoes’ current Spider-Man ranking, but live-action favorites such as Spider-Man 2 and No Way Home make the debate worth having.
Why Into the Spider-Verse is the best all-around Spider-Man movie
The film’s central advantage is that its style serves its character story. Miles Morales is learning what his new powers mean while trying to figure out who he wants to be. The arrival of other Spider-people expands the adventure, but the emotional question remains personal: can Miles become his own version of Spider-Man?
Its animation makes that journey feel unlike a conventional superhero origin. The comic-inspired images and shifting visual approaches give the story a distinct energy, while the action remains legible and tied to the characters. The result is not simply a striking-looking film; its visual form helps express the exhilaration and uncertainty of Miles’s transformation.
It also balances qualities that can pull a superhero movie in different directions. There is plenty of action and humor, but the heart of the story is never buried beneath spectacle. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes it as “bold storytelling with striking animation” and praises its “heart, humor, and plenty of superhero action.” That is the platform’s institutional consensus, not a quote from one critic.

- ?Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
For viewers who want a Spider-Man film that feels complete on its own, the self-contained Miles-centered story is another strength. Its ensemble opens up the wider Spider-Verse without requiring the audience to know a long history of previous films.
How the film compares with the strongest alternatives
| Film | What makes it a contender | Rotten Tomatoes snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse | Miles’s coming-of-age story, distinctive animation, and combination of comedy, feeling, and action. | 97% Tomatometer from 398 critic reviews and 93% Popcornmeter from 25,000+ audience ratings, as reported on Rotten Tomatoes’ film page, accessed in 2026. | Spider-Man 2 | A strong live-action case built around Peter Parker’s personal struggle, emotional focus, and an effective villain. | 93% Tomatometer and 82% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, accessed in 2026. These aggregates can change. |
| Spider-Man: No Way Home | A crossover and legacy event for viewers who value returning characters and the accumulated history of the live-action films. | The cited Rotten Tomatoes first-reviews roundup records strong launch-era reactions, including a critic’s claim that it was the best live-action entry; it is not a systematic all-time ranking. |
What the rankings and scores can—and cannot—settle
Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial guide currently ranks Into the Spider-Verse first among Spider-Man movies and Across the Spider-Verse second. The guide displays 97% Tomatometer and 93% Popcornmeter for the first film. Those rankings and scores support its standing as a leading choice, but they measure reception on one platform rather than an objective quality scale.
Rank #2
- ?Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
The two scores also represent different groups and measures: the Tomatometer reflects critics’ reviews, while the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. They are not interchangeable, and the film page’s review and rating totals are snapshots rather than permanent counts. A few percentage points cannot tell you whether you will prefer animation, a particular Peter Parker, or a film built around franchise nostalgia.
The film also received official recognition: the Academy’s factsheet for the 91st Oscars lists it in the Best Animated Feature context and names Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. That recognition reinforces its achievement as an animated feature; it is not an Academy ranking of Spider-Man films.

When another Spider-Man movie may be your best
Choose Spider-Man 2 for Peter Parker’s live-action drama
If what you most want is a live-action Peter wrestling with his responsibilities and personal life, Spider-Man 2 has a compelling claim. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus highlights the villain and deeper emotional focus. Its lower displayed aggregates than Into the Spider-Verse do not invalidate that preference; scores cannot decide which character arc resonates with you.
Choose No Way Home for the crossover
Spider-Man: No Way Home is a credible alternative if the pleasures of a large-scale crossover and returning characters matter most. The first-reviews roundup shows that some critics responded to it as a standout live-action entry when it launched in 2021. That launch reaction is evidence of enthusiasm, not a settled current consensus.
Rank #4
- ?Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
Choose by the experience you want
- For an inventive animated style and a coming-of-age story centered on Miles, start with Into the Spider-Verse.
- For a live-action character drama focused on Peter Parker, consider Spider-Man 2.
- For a legacy crossover built around returning characters, consider No Way Home.
Verdict: the strongest recommendation, not the only valid answer
Into the Spider-Verse earns the top spot by making its character arc, visual invention, humor, and superhero action feel like parts of the same film. It is the best all-around pick if those are your criteria, and Rotten Tomatoes’ current ranking backs its position as a leading choice. “Not close” is the enthusiasm of the argument, not a claim that every viewer—or every measure—must agree.
