Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s best-selling game by a wide margin: Take-Two Interactive reported more than 215 million units sold-in worldwide in its FY2025 filing. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the next-leading title with a cited current total, at more than 75 million units. The evidence does not support a definitive all-time ranking for every Rockstar release, so the list below ranks the two strongest documented leaders and separates older milestones from verified current totals.
Best-selling Rockstar games ranked by documented title sales
These figures are not all measured the same way or reported at the same time. Take-Two’s FY2025 filing describes the two leading totals as units “sold-in”; Rockstar’s San Andreas figure is a historical worldwide copies milestone. The table preserves those distinctions rather than treating every number as a current, directly comparable lifetime count.
| Rank or status | Game | Reported figure | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grand Theft Auto V | More than 215 million units worldwide; Take-Two FY2025 filing | Title-specific publisher-reported sell-in figure. It is not an exact October 2026 consumer sell-through count. Take-Two FY2025 filing |

1. Grand Theft Auto V: the clear sales leader
Take-Two reported that Grand Theft Auto V had sold-in more than 215 million units worldwide in its FY2025 filing. That makes GTA V the clear leader among the Rockstar titles with current title-specific figures cited here. The figure is the publisher’s stated sell-in total, not a retail-tracking estimate of how many copies consumers bought, and it should be dated to the filing rather than presented as a live count.
Take-Two also said in a February 2026 investor presentation that GTA V was the best-selling U.S. title by both unit and dollar sales over the preceding ten-year period, based on Circana retail tracking. That is a U.S.-only comparison over a specified window; it is not a worldwide lifetime unit total and cannot be used to rank Rockstar’s full catalog. Take-Two investor presentations

2. Red Dead Redemption 2: the next best-documented title
In the same FY2025 filing, Take-Two reported that Red Dead Redemption 2 had sold-in more than 75 million units worldwide. On the comparable current title-level evidence available here, it follows GTA V. The figure does not by itself establish that it is definitively Rockstar’s second-best-selling game across every release: no current comparable total is provided for every title.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and its 27.5 million milestone
Rockstar corrected earlier reporting in 2011 and said San Andreas remained the franchise’s sales champion at 27.5 million copies worldwide at that point. The correction matters: an initial report suggested GTA IV had passed it, but the corrected account restored San Andreas as the leader then. This historical number is useful evidence of the game’s scale, but it cannot establish San Andreas’s present-day all-time rank against titles whose later totals are not disclosed on the same basis.

An earlier Take-Two annual report recorded more than 12 million San Andreas units worldwide by the end of January 2005. That is a dated milestone, superseded for lifetime context by Rockstar’s later 27.5 million correction; it should not be added to that figure. Take-Two annual reports
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a complete all-time ranking is not verifiable
Take-Two publishes selected game and franchise figures, not a current, consistent title-by-title sales table for every Rockstar release. As a result, an exact numbered list extending through older Grand Theft Auto games, Red Dead titles, Max Payne, Bully, or Midnight Club would require estimates that are not established by the cited figures.

- A dated milestone is not a current lifetime total. Take-Two’s historical GTA IV disclosure was more than 8.5 million units worldwide by May 31, 2008. It does not reveal GTA IV’s later total or its current place in the ranking. GameSpot’s report of the 2008 milestone
- A franchise number is not a single-game number. Take-Two reported more than 440 million units for the Grand Theft Auto franchise in a 2024 presentation. That aggregate combines multiple games and cannot be assigned to GTA V or used as a title ranking. Take-Two investor presentations
- Geography and measurement window matter. The Circana-based GTA V claim concerns U.S. retail sales over the preceding ten-year period, while the FY2025 figures are publisher-reported worldwide sell-in totals.
How to read the rankings and figures
- Sell-in: The term used by Take-Two for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the publisher’s reported measure and is not interchangeable with a retailer’s consumer sell-through count.
- Copies versus units: Rockstar’s corrected San Andreas figure is stated as copies; Take-Two’s FY2025 totals use units. Keep each source’s wording and date attached to its number.
- Title versus franchise: A game-level total belongs to one release. Franchise totals aggregate multiple games and cannot be used to fill missing title-level figures.
