It is a listening path through a parallel pop scene that gave singers identities beyond film playback, made music videos part of the music itself, and moved between romance, dance-pop, guitar-led songwriting, bhangra and Indian-classical fusion. These selections balance memorable hits with a range of voices and styles.
What made 1990s Indipop different?
Indipop offered artists a route to pop stardom outside Hindi-film playback. Singers released original albums under their own names and built distinct public personas, often through music videos. Scroll’s 2019 retrospective describes the scene as a parallel industry competing with film music; India Today’s 2024 retrospective places its sound among Indian classical and Western pop influences.
There was no single Indipop formula. Romantic songs and dance-oriented tracks sat alongside guitar pop, bhangra-influenced music and experiments that blended Indian classical elements with funk, rock or electronics. The list below is a curated selection, not a definitive chart.
A listening list: essential 1990s Indipop songs
Early momentum and dance-pop
- Suneeta Rao — “Paree Hoon Main” (1991): An early hit that Scroll places before the scene’s mid-decade consolidation. It is a useful starting point for hearing how a pop identity could stand apart from a film soundtrack.
- Shweta Shetty — “Johnny Joker” (1993) and “Deewane”: Two dance-oriented entries that show the scene’s bright, performance-led side.
- Baba Sehgal: A defining figure in the era’s rap-pop turn. In a 2024 India Today retrospective, Sehgal recalled the period as an exciting but challenging new beginning for Indi-pop.
Alisha Chinai: a pop star in her own video
- “Made in India” and “Lover Girl”: Both are associated with Chinai’s album Made In India. The title song’s video became a defining visual moment, presenting Chinai as the singer rather than a performer lip-syncing for a film character.
Music television helped make that visual identity central. Chinai told India Today that MTV and VH1 helped audiences connect songs with their visuals. Speaking to The Indian Express in 2021, she recalled that Magnasound offered her the album in December 1994 and that she recorded it in London with Biddu. She also remembered asking for Milind Soman and Indian visual elements in the video. “This was the first time they were seeing a singer who’s being herself and not lip-syncing,” she said.

The album’s dates need care: Apple Music’s catalog page lists Made In India as an Indian Pop album dated June 18, 1996, while its ℗ line says 1995. Chinai’s recollection of the project being offered in December 1994 describes an earlier stage, not a competing catalog release date. Apple Music lists 11 songs and a 50-minute running time.
Romance, youthful storytelling and radio hits
- Falguni Pathak — “Maine Paayal Hai Chhankai”: A signature example of Pathak’s youthful, romance-centered music videos.
- Suchitra Krishnamoorthi — “Dole Dole” (1995): Scroll identifies it as a television and radio hit, capturing how a song could circulate across formats in the decade.
- Shaan — “Tanha Dil”: A solo-album hit that shows the singer-songwriter side of the scene.
Guitar pop and collaborative experiments
- Lucky Ali — “Dekha Hai Aise Bhi” and “Gori Teri Aankhen”: Their guitar-pop character and duet textures provide a contrast to the more dance-driven entries.
- KK — “Yaaron” (1999): From the album Pal, this song was composed by Lesle Lewis, according to Scroll. Its friendship-centered mood became one of the decade’s enduring pop signatures.
- Colonial Cousins — “Sa Ni Dha Pa”: A fusion example drawing on Indian classical, funk, rock and electronic elements.
- Remo Fernandes — “O Mere Munni” (1998): An offbeat selection that broadens the list beyond romantic ballads and polished dance-pop.
How to listen across the scene
These songs make more sense as different approaches to pop than as entries in a strict genre taxonomy. Listen for the distinctions that shaped their appeal:

- Mood and audience: The selection moves from romance and youthful longing to friendship, playful performance and experimentation.
Why did Indipop fade from the foreground?
There is no single settled explanation. In India Today’s 2024 interviews, Alisha Chinai blamed overcrowding and declining quality. Suchitra Krishnamoorthi pointed to the shift from cassettes and CDs to digital distribution, which independent labels with limited resources struggled to navigate. Sudhanshu Pandey and Neeraj Sridhar argued that film music absorbed sounds and techniques once associated with pop. These are artists’ retrospective explanations, not a quantified account of one cause.
The scene’s legacy is easier to hear than to reduce to a single statistic: its best-known songs established independent pop personas and visual styles, while some of its sounds also found a place in film music.
