Gadd’s performance gives the show its confessional center, while Jessica Gunning’s supporting performance makes the stalking storyline more unsettling than a conventional “menace” portrayal would be. The series’ emotional force comes partly from its refusal to make the situation easy to categorize or consume.
That approach can be distressing. The show contains stalking, sexual assault, trauma, coercion, substance use and psychologically intense material. Anyone sensitive to those subjects should approach it with care. 3 Body Problem is Netflix’s major science-fiction contender from 2024. Its story moves between the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Oxford and the United Nations as an existential threat challenges humanity’s understanding of science and the universe.
Its advantage is scope. The show aims at a large, serialized science-fiction story with franchise potential, rather than the tightly contained emotional arc of Baby Reindeer. Its limitation in a year-end comparison is that the first season spends substantial time establishing its world, mysteries and future possibilities. That makes it more setup-driven and less self-contained—not necessarily worse, but less immediately complete as a single season.
