For the U.S. Netflix catalog during Nov. 7–14, 2025, the strongest two picks were Ballad of a Small Player and Martin Scorsese’s Casino. The first is a newer, intimate gambling noir led by Colin Farrell; the second is the much larger, nearly three-hour Las Vegas crime epic starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci.
This is a historical recommendation guide for that specific week—not a claim about what Netflix carries today. Netflix availability changes by country and date, so check the title directly in your local Netflix app before planning a movie night.
1. Ballad of a Small Player: the best choice for a moody gambling drama
Ballad of a Small Player was the lead recommendation for the week and Netflix’s more immediate, contemporary choice. Directed by Edward Berger and starring Colin Farrell, Fala Chen, and Deanie Ip, the 2025 film follows a gambler hiding out in Macau as he drinks, gambles, and burns through what money he has left.
His situation becomes increasingly desperate: debts accumulate, a private investigator closes in, and a mysterious casino employee appears to offer a possible way out. The result is better understood as a stylish, slow-burning psychological drama or gambling noir than as a conventional action movie.

Why watch it?
- Macau gives the film a distinctive setting. Casinos, neon, luxury, and isolation provide the backdrop for a story about self-destruction.
- Colin Farrell is the center of the film. The role depends on watching a compromised man attempt to navigate debt, addiction, shame, and the possibility of redemption.
- It is a relatively current Netflix pick. Netflix’s global streaming debut was reported as Oct. 29, 2025, so it was available throughout the Nov. 7–14 window covered by this guide.
The original weekly recommendation identified the film as sitting at fourth place in Netflix’s popularity rankings heading into the Nov. 7 weekend. It also listed an R rating and an IMDb score of 5.8/10 at publication. That IMDb figure is a dated snapshot, not a permanent rating; later results showed the score changing to 5.9/10.
Choose this if: you want a modern casino setting, a darker and more personal story, and a patient character study rather than a sprawling gangster saga.
Set expectations: this is not being presented as an action-heavy crowd-pleaser or as universally acclaimed. Its appeal is its atmosphere, setting, moral deterioration, and central performance.

2. Casino: the bigger, more operatic companion
If the casino setting and gambling theme of Ballad of a Small Player appeal to you but you want something broader and more explosive, the natural companion recommendation is Martin Scorsese’s 1995 crime epic Casino.
Recommended Free Tools
Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci lead the film, which examines organized crime’s control of a Las Vegas casino and the rise and collapse of the people managing it. Ambition, violence, romance, money, addiction, and betrayal all become part of the same machinery.
Casino is not a sequel to Ballad of a Small Player, and the films do not share a story or setting. The connection is thematic: both use gambling and casino culture to explore obsession, power, risk, and personal collapse.

- Alexa voice control - The Alexa Voice Remote lets you easily control your entertainment, search across apps, switch inputs, and more using just your voice. Press and hold the voice button and ask Alexa to easily find, launch, and control content, and even switch to cable.

- Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.
Why watch it?
- It delivers a much larger canvas. Where Ballad of a Small Player focuses on one gambler’s precarious existence, Casino expands into an organized-crime history of Las Vegas.
- The central performances are substantial. De Niro, Stone, and Pesci portray people whose professional success and private appetites steadily pull them toward disaster.
- It suits a longer movie night. At nearly three hours, it is a commitment, but its scale makes it the better choice for viewers who want an immersive crime saga.
Choose this if: you want Scorsese’s maximalist take on Las Vegas, a historical crime story, and a more violent, sprawling alternative to the intimate mood of Ballad of a Small Player.
Availability note: this recommendation is bounded to the historical Netflix window covered here. Streaming catalogs rotate, and evidence that Casino appeared on Netflix during a later period does not by itself prove its availability in the United States from Nov. 7 through Nov. 14, 2025. If you are reading this after that week, search for the title in Netflix or check a current, region-specific streaming guide.
Which movie should you watch first?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A newer film | Ballad of a Small Player | It is the 2025 release and the more current Netflix recommendation. |
| A Macau casino and a troubled central character | Ballad of a Small Player | Its story stays close to one gambler’s debts, addiction, and possible escape. |
| Las Vegas, organized crime, and a much bigger story | Casino | Scorsese’s film follows the casino business and the criminal power behind it. |
| A long, operatic crime epic | Casino | Its nearly three-hour runtime allows for a much broader rise-and-fall narrative. |
| A slower, more atmospheric watch | Ballad of a Small Player | It is framed as a psychological gambling noir rather than an action film. |
How to use this list if you are watching outside the original week
- Confirm your country. Netflix libraries differ by territory, so a U.S. recommendation cannot establish availability in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or elsewhere.
- Search Netflix directly. Availability can change even within the same country. A title’s presence in a dated article is not proof that it is still streamable.
- Check the film’s details page. Verify the rating, runtime, audio, subtitles, and maturity information for your account and region.
- Pick by mood rather than by supposed quality ranking. Choose Ballad of a Small Player for a compact, contemporary gambling drama; choose Casino for an expansive crime epic.
Optional movie-night setup
Neither film requires special equipment beyond a Netflix-supported device and a suitable screen. If you want a larger presentation, a Netflix-compatible projector can work through a supported computer or streaming device connected by HDMI, or through an appropriate adapter. Compatibility varies by projector, operating system, streaming device, and connection, so confirm the setup before buying; a projector is an optional accessory, not a requirement for watching either recommendation.
Viewers who want to keep the companion film after its streaming availability changes can also look for a Casino 4K movie edition or digital release. That is an ownership option rather than a replacement for Netflix access, and formats, sellers, and regional availability can change.
What this dated list does—and does not—claim
The accessible source for the Nov. 7–14, 2025 weekly feature reliably identifies these two recommendations: Ballad of a Small Player as the lead pick and Casino as the larger-scale companion. It does not provide enough verified information here to add further titles, ratings, or headings without inventing details. Accordingly, this guide does not pretend to reproduce an unverified four-film list.
