Rian Johnson’s time-travel thriller is the strongest all-purpose recommendation in this August 2024 snapshot: it is inventive enough for science-fiction fans, accessible enough for a broad audience, and more substantial than a disposable action movie. For other moods, choose Paddington for family viewing or make a multi-night event of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
This is a historical guide to the Amazon Prime Video catalog reported in August 2024, primarily for the U.S. market. Prime Video licensing changes by country and over time, so a film listed here may require a separate rental or purchase—or may no longer be available—when you check it.
Start here: three dependable picks
Looper — the best overall choice for adult science-fiction fans
In Rian Johnson’s 2012 thriller, Joe works as a “looper,” an assassin employed by a criminal organization in 2044 to kill victims sent back from the future. The job becomes morally and practically complicated when Joe’s next target is his older self.
The premise gives Looper a strong action hook, but the film’s real appeal is the conflict between self-preservation and the possibility of changing the future. It asks difficult questions without abandoning momentum or character drama. Tom’s Guide reported a 93% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score in its August 2024 Prime Video roundup; that percentage was a snapshot, not a permanent rating. TheWrap described the film as fascinating and thought-provoking, and TV Guide listed it among the August 1 additions.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Choose it if: you want smart science fiction that still feels like a thriller. It is a better first recommendation than a purely obscure or effects-driven genre title.
Want to keep it? Sony confirms that Looper 4K Blu-ray editions exist alongside Blu-ray and DVD formats. A physical copy is an alternative to streaming access, not evidence that the film remains included with Prime Video.
Paddington — the best family pick
A young bear from Peru travels to London, where he is taken in by the Brown family and attempts to adapt to domestic life, city rules, and the complications of being an unusually polite bear with a serious appetite for marmalade.
Paddington is warm, funny, and imaginative without relying on the kind of frantic pacing that can make family films tiring for adults. Tom’s Guide reported a 95% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score in August 2024, and TV Guide listed it as an August 15 arrival. Parents should still check the film’s rating and decide whether its peril and mild comic danger suit their children.

Choose it if: several ages need to agree on one movie. It is the clearest all-ages recommendation in this list, although “family-friendly” does not mean every child will respond to it in exactly the same way.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy — the best fantasy marathon
Amazon’s listed trilogy consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King: Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the central quest to destroy the One Ring before its power returns to its maker. TheWrap reported that all three films were available together, and TV Guide included each title in its August list.
This is not a quick recommendation for a spare evening. It works best as a weekend event or a three-night viewing plan. The films offer large-scale battles and fantasy spectacle, but their enduring appeal also comes from the fellowship at the center of the story and the gradual emotional cost of the journey.
Keep the label clear: this is the Lord of the Rings trilogy, not the separate three-film Hobbit trilogy. Also, do not assume that a subscription listing included every extended edition, bonus feature, or alternate presentation unless the specific listing said so.

More excellent choices by mood
Cinema Paradiso — a movie about the love of movies
Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso follows a boy’s relationship with a movie theater and its projectionist. It is sentimental, international, and deeply interested in the way a cinema can become part of a person’s identity and memory.
Tom’s Guide reported a 91% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score in its August 2024 guide, while TV Guide listed it among the August 1 additions. This is the right choice when “classic” should mean emotionally resonant and cinema-centered rather than simply old or famous.
Choose it if: you want a reflective film about memory, mentorship, and the communal experience of watching movies.
American Graffiti — the best nostalgia-driven classic
Before leaving for college, a group of California teenagers spends one long night cruising, talking, flirting, listening to music, and trying to work out what comes next. George Lucas’s 1973 film turns that apparently simple setup into an ensemble portrait of an early-1960s youth culture on the edge of change.
The soundtrack and period setting are central to the film, but its strongest feature is the uncertainty underneath the nostalgia. These characters are not merely enjoying one last night; they are confronting the fact that their familiar social world may be ending. Tom’s Guide reported a 95% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score in August 2024, and TV Guide listed the film as an August 1 addition.
Choose it if: you want a classic with music, atmosphere, and coming-of-age anxiety rather than a conventional action plot.
Face/Off — the best unapologetically excessive action film
John Woo’s Face/Off places John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in an identity-swapping thriller built around an FBI agent and the criminal he is pursuing. The premise is intentionally extravagant, and the film commits to that extravagance with theatrical performances, operatic violence, and action scenes that value style as much as realism.

Tom’s Guide reported a 93% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score in its August 2024 roundup, and TV Guide listed it among the August 1 arrivals. Those figures should not obscure what kind of movie this is: Face/Off is best approached as maximalist action, not as a restrained police procedural.
Choose it if: you want a knowingly over-the-top double performance and do not need your crime thriller to behave realistically.
21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street — the best comedy double feature
In 21 Jump Street, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill play police officers sent undercover at a high school. The movie uses its television-remake premise to joke about reboots, adolescence, school hierarchies, and the actors’ own unlikely pairing. 22 Jump Street moves the undercover assignment to college and turns the sequel itself into the subject of the joke.
Watching the films together is the point. The second movie repeatedly plays with sequel formulas and the expectations established by the first, so recommending only one loses the strongest editorial hook. TV Guide listed both titles among the August 1 additions, while TheWrap recommended them as a pair.

Adventureland — the best bittersweet coming-of-age option
Greg Mottola’s 2009 dramedy follows a recent college graduate who takes a job at a theme park in the 1980s and develops a complicated relationship with a co-worker. The amusement-park setting supplies comic characters and awkward situations, but the film is more wistful than its premise initially suggests.
The soundtrack, supporting performances, and uncertainty about adulthood give Adventureland a lasting emotional texture. It is less about a dramatic transformation than about the uncomfortable period when plans have failed and the next direction is not yet clear. TheWrap highlighted its wistfulness and ensemble, and TV Guide listed it among the August 1 additions.

Jackpot! — a light action-comedy for an easy evening
Awkwafina plays a woman who wins a lottery in a near-future Los Angeles where lottery winners can legally be targeted by anyone trying to claim the prize. John Cena plays the protection agent hired to keep her alive. The setup turns a conventional “protect the witness” story into a running chase with a deliberately absurd legal premise.
Directed by Paul Feig, Jackpot! was a prominent Prime Video original for August 2024, with TV Guide giving it an August 15 release date. Its premise supports a breezy action-comedy recommendation, but the available research does not establish it as a consensus critical favorite. Treat it as a mood pick rather than as the month’s definitive best film.
Choose it if: you want a new-to-the-month action comedy, broad performances, and a high-concept chase rather than a serious drama.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fantasy after Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit trilogy
TheWrap also included The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies alongside the Lord of the Rings films. TV Guide listed all three Hobbit titles among the August 1 additions.
This is best treated as a companion marathon for viewers who already enjoy Middle-earth or have finished the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The films have bright spots, but the decision to expand one novel into three large films drew criticism, as did the heavy use of CGI. That makes the trilogy a weaker first recommendation for newcomers than Fellowship, Two Towers, and Return of the King.
Choose it if: you want more Middle-earth after Lord of the Rings and are comfortable with a longer, more uneven prequel journey.

Other notable August 2024 additions
TV Guide’s August guide also reported titles including Psycho, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, Emma., Eastern Promises, The Whale, Scarface, The Warriors, Traffic, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!
These are useful secondary options for readers who already know their preferred genre, but they should not be presented as a guaranteed universal Prime catalog. TV Guide distinguished some titles that were free with ads through Freevee. “Available through Amazon” can therefore mean different things: included with a Prime subscription, free with advertising, or available to rent or buy.
How to read the availability claims
- Check your country first. Streaming rights are regional. The cited Amazon editorial page was published for Australia and cannot by itself prove U.S. availability.
- Look for the access label. On the title’s Prime Video page, distinguish “included with Prime” from a rental, purchase, or Freevee-with-ads option.
- Verify the date. The recommendations above describe reporting from August 2024, including TV Guide’s August guide, TheWrap’s August 18 list, Tom’s Guide’s August 11 roundup, and Amazon Australia’s July 23 editorial page.
- Check the edition. A listing for a film does not automatically mean that its extended cut, bonus material, 4K stream, or alternate version is included.
- Do not treat ratings as fixed. The Rotten Tomatoes percentages cited above were the critic scores Tom’s Guide reported in August 2024. Scores can change as additional reviews are added.
Amazon’s Australia-specific August page also separated subscription titles from “rent or buy” selections such as The Bikeriders, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Despicable Me 4. That distinction is a useful reminder that a film appearing in an Amazon editorial list is not necessarily included with Prime, and that the same title may have different access options in another country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these movies still on Amazon Prime Video?
This article is an August 2024 snapshot, not a claim about the catalog in 2026. Prime Video rights change by country and date, so check the current title page for your region and confirm whether the film is included with Prime, free with ads, or available only to rent or buy.
What is the best movie on this August 2024 list?
Looper is the strongest single recommendation for most adult viewers because it combines an accessible thriller structure with a thoughtful science-fiction premise. Choose Paddington for family viewing and the Lord of the Rings trilogy for a fantasy marathon.
Are the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies the same thing?
No. The Lord of the Rings trilogy consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The separate Hobbit trilogy begins with An Unexpected Journey and is best approached as a companion set.
