Who are the best Japanese wrestlers in WWE history? By WWE achievement and prominence first, with influence outside WWE as context, the strongest documented choices are Asuka, Shinsuke Nakamura, IYO SKY and Bull Nakano. The Great Muta and Antonio Inoki belong in a broader legacy conversation, but their WWE Hall of Fame recognition does not establish long WWE match records.
This is a subjective ranking, not the result of a poll or an official scoring system. The available career details support six defensible selections, not eight: KENTA’s WWE signing is documented, but the material available here does not establish enough of his WWE record to rank him precisely. Rather than invent two more candidates or overstate the evidence, this list stops at six.
How this ranking works
The order weighs four things: WWE championships and milestones; the length and prominence of a wrestler’s WWE contribution; influence on WWE or later performers; and, where relevant, the wrestler’s wider career. That last factor matters most for Muta and Inoki, whose places here are legacy selections rather than claims of extensive WWE careers.
WWE profiles and Hall of Fame announcements are useful records of how WWE presents these careers, but they are not independent comparative rankings. The order below is therefore an editorial judgment, and the evidence is strongest for some WWE accomplishments—not for a precise numerical comparison across every career.

The best Japanese wrestlers in WWE history, ranked
1. Asuka
Asuka has the broadest documented collection of WWE milestones among the candidates here. WWE lists her as a three-time WWE Women’s Champion, Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion, five-time WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, 2020 Money in the Bank winner, the first Women’s Royal Rumble winner, and an NXT Women’s Champion.
Her early NXT run adds a notable measure of dominance: WWE says she was not pinned or submitted from her October 2015 debut until WrestleMania 34 in April 2018. The combination of singles titles, tag-team success and a signature first gives her the strongest case when the ranking prioritizes WWE contribution.
2. Shinsuke Nakamura
Nakamura’s WWE record includes a 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble victory, two NXT Championship reigns, two Intercontinental Championship reigns, three United States Championship reigns and a SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Those milestones make his WWE résumé unusually varied.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
His wider Japanese career strengthens the case without being interchangeable with his WWE record. WWE’s profile credits him with three IWGP Heavyweight Championship reigns and says he first won the title at age 23, then the youngest competitor to do so. That distinction is a WWE-profile claim about his career in Japan, not a WWE title accomplishment.
3. IYO SKY
IYO SKY’s WWE profile lists Women’s World Champion and WWE Women’s Champion accomplishments, three WWE Women’s Tag Team reigns, and NXT women’s accomplishments. It also records her 2023 Money in the Bank victory: she won the ladder match and cashed in at SummerSlam to defeat Bianca Belair.
The profile also lists Queen of the Ring (2026). Because championships and tournament status can change, treat the profile’s current entries as a time-sensitive snapshot rather than a permanent record. Her high-profile WWE milestones put her among the strongest candidates, though her documented body of WWE work is less extensive in this account than Asuka’s.
Rank #3

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Bull Nakano
Bull Nakano’s clearest WWE milestone is a historic one. WWE recounts her rivalry with Alundra Blayze and says Nakano won the Women’s Championship on November 24, 1994, in Tokyo, before more than 42,000 fans. WWE announced her Hall of Fame induction in 2024.
That championship victory gives Nakano a concrete place in WWE history, while the Hall of Fame recognition underscores her legacy. Her ranking reflects the significance of that documented milestone, not an assertion that her WWE tenure matched the longer body of work of the performers above her.

The Great Muta is best understood as a legacy selection. WWE describes him as a Japanese wrestling legend whose career crossed Japanese promotions and WCW, and inducted him into the 2023 Hall of Fame. The announcement described a career spanning more than 39 years and noted a late-career match with Nakamura.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That recognition and reach make Muta important to a discussion of Japanese wrestling’s connection to WWE. They do not, by themselves, establish a substantial WWE match record, so his placement rests on influence and WWE’s acknowledgment of his broader career rather than on a long WWE title résumé.
6. Antonio Inoki
Antonio Inoki’s place is also about influence, not a claimed long WWE run. WWE identifies him as a major Japanese wrestling figure, founder of New Japan Pro Wrestling and a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee. Its profile also recounts his famous 1976 match with Muhammad Ali.
Inoki belongs in a wider history of the relationship between Japanese wrestling and WWE because of his stature and the promotion he founded. The available record here supports that legacy case; it does not provide a basis for comparing his WWE match record directly with the full-time WWE careers ranked above him.

Why this list has six names, not eight
The title’s requested number cannot be met responsibly from the documented candidates alone. WWE announced KENTA’s signing in July 2014 and described his prior prominence in Pro Wrestling Noah and Ring of Honor. WWE later presented him as Hideo Itami, but the available material does not verify the details of that WWE run or its milestones well enough for a precise ranking. He is a plausible candidate for a fuller, separately verified list, not a sound basis for filling a slot by guesswork.
Yokozuna is also not included on the strength of WWE’s profile alone. Its Japanese character billing and description of him as a Japanese sumo wrestler are not reliable evidence of his actual ethnicity or birthplace. Without firmer support for classifying him as Japanese, including him would risk misrepresenting the subject.
Who is the greatest Japanese WWE wrestler?
If “greatest” means the strongest documented WWE résumé in this group, Asuka is the clearest answer: her profile combines a first-of-its-kind Royal Rumble win with multiple singles and tag-team championships. Nakamura is a close alternative for readers who give more weight to a blend of WWE milestones and an accomplished Japanese career. If the question instead means influence on wrestling history beyond WWE, Muta and Inoki merit consideration—but that is a different standard from sustained WWE achievement.
