Vogue’s best-dressed selection for the 29th Critics Choice Awards highlights 19 looks, with red and floral details linking gowns and menswear. It is an editorial choice, not an objective ranking: fashion writer Christian Allaire described the night’s standout style as leaning into “a sense of fun and whimsy.”
How to read the best-dressed selection
The Critics Choice Awards took place on January 14, 2024, at Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport. British Vogue reported that the ceremony moved there from a planned hotel venue because the hotel’s staff was involved in a labor dispute. Vogue’s slideshow selects 19 looks; British Vogue’s broader red-carpet gallery contains 134 entries. Those are publication gallery counts, not counts of all attendees or audience votes.
Neither gallery establishes a universal winner. The looks below are best understood as a set of editorial standouts, compared through color, silhouette, embellishment, tailoring, and personal details.
Red and floral details connect gowns and suits
Red supplied a shared thread across different kinds of formalwear. Margot Robbie wore a custom off-the-shoulder Balmain design, while Dua Lipa chose a custom strapless Prada column dress. In menswear, Charles Melton’s deep red double-breasted Valentino tuxedo made the color part of the suit itself. Jeremy Allen White took a subtler route, adding a red floral brooch to a sleek Saint Laurent suit.

The contrast is what makes the theme useful: Robbie and Lipa brought red into sculptural evening dresses, Melton built it into tailored formalwear, and White used a single accessory as an accent. Allaire’s observation that the night’s best-dressed stars embraced fun and whimsy fits that mix of bold color and playful detail.
Saturated color and surface detail
Several other selections stood out through color or texture. Rosamund Pike wore an aqua sequined Rodarte dress, making surface sparkle part of the look’s main impression. Julianne Moore chose a strapless purple Chanel Couture design, a saturated alternative to the red looks.
Embellishment also shaped Greta Lee’s outfit: her crystal-covered Loewe top and trousers offered a polished alternative to a conventional gown. Emma Stone’s scalloped, one-shouldered Louis Vuitton gown used its neckline and edge detail to distinguish its silhouette. Together, the looks show different ways to make an evening outfit memorable—through sequins, crystals, saturated color, or a distinctive cut.
