The rumor centered on a more specific tabloid story—that they were swingers who hosted parties—and Shepard addressed it in a September 2024 television appearance. Bell had previously said jokes about swinging may have fueled the speculation. Their remarks describe what they chose to say publicly; they do not provide independent access to every private agreement in their marriage.
Where the open-marriage rumor came from
The reporting traced the speculation to tabloid claims that Bell and Shepard were swingers who hosted parties. In an earlier Armchair Expert discussion, Bell said jokes about leaving keys at the door when guests visited, along with Shepard’s podcast references to swinging, may have been taken too literally. The Independent reported that she objected to jokes being treated as factual disclosures. The Independent’s account places Bell’s explanation before Shepard’s later television response.
What Dax Shepard said about the rumor
On the season-five premiere of The Drew Barrymore Show, Shepard addressed the tabloid story. The Independent reported that friends had teased the couple by texting jokes about not being invited to the supposed parties, and that they knew the couple was not hosting them. Shepard said: “There’s a lot of hot couples out there, but no, we have not crossed that divide with anyone.” In context, he was responding to the speculation raised in the interview; the remark should not be expanded into a claim about matters he was not discussing. The Independent published its report on September 11, 2024.
How to read the claims without conflating them
- The party rumor: The specific tabloid story described the couple as swingers who hosted parties. Shepard said they were not hosting such parties.
- The broader label “open marriage”: That label is not established by jokes about swinging, on-screen chemistry, or a comment about attraction. The public remarks cited in the coverage do not substantiate it.
- Relationship comments: Parade’s October 2025 update recounts Bell’s remarks about foundational trust and open communication, as well as her joking support when Shepard kissed a co-star on screen. Those are descriptions of their reported relationship dynamic, not confirmation of nonmonogamy. Parade’s relationship explainer is a secondary account of those remarks.
What the public record can—and cannot—show
The cited coverage establishes what Bell and Shepard reportedly said about the rumor, not every private arrangement in their marriage. The articles are secondary reports; the reviewed coverage does not include a direct transcript or primary video page. A careful answer is therefore limited: the reporting does not support presenting the open-marriage claim as fact, while private details beyond their public comments remain private.
#1 Best Overall
Parade and The Independent report that Bell and Shepard met in 2007 and married in 2013. Those biographical details provide context, but do not establish anything about the couple’s private relationship agreements.
