The public listing does not identify the object or explain what it was. That makes it a documented case worth examining, not proof of extraordinary or extraterrestrial technology.
What makes a 2024 UFO sighting worth examining?
“Best” and “most brilliant” are subjective labels. Official sources do not rank sightings by clarity, credibility, or significance, and the available evidence does not support an objective league table or a globally representative roundup. This article uses a narrower standard: whether an official case record exists, whether footage or sensor data is documented, and whether an explanation has been offered.
By those criteria, PR-018 is a notable documented example. It is not possible to compare it fairly with other 2024 reports from the evidence available here, so it should not be described as the year’s clearest or most compelling sighting.
PR-018: an unresolved infrared report from Europe
AARO’s official imagery listing identifies PR-018, Unresolved UAP Report, Europe 2024. The listing says U.S. European Command submitted a report consisting of 10 minutes and 30 seconds of infrared footage recorded by a sensor aboard a U.S. military platform in 2024.

The public case description established here does not give a more specific date or location, describe the object’s appearance or movement, recount a witness account, or state a cause. It labels the report unresolved; that means the available record has not identified the object, not that an extraordinary explanation has been demonstrated.
Which 2024 UFO sightings were caught on camera—and were they explained?
PR-018 is the clearly documented camera-based example in the official material cited here: its evidence is infrared sensor footage. The Department of Defense’s FY2024 report also discusses reports with video-related observations, but the examples below should not be mistaken for a complete catalog of calendar-year sightings.

A flashing-light report correlated with a Starlink launch
AARO assessed that one report of flashing lights correlated with a Starlink satellite launch from Cape Canaveral about an hour earlier. This is an explanation for that report, not evidence that every similar-looking light has the same cause.
Birds can appear to flicker in video
The FY2024 report notes that birds in full-motion video commonly appear to flicker. A visual effect in footage, by itself, may therefore be insufficient to identify what was recorded.

Why the FY2024 report is not a full-year 2024 roundup
The Department of Defense’s FY2024 consolidated report covers May 1, 2023, through June 1, 2024. Its figures describe that reporting window, which includes part of 2023 and omits the rest of calendar year 2024.
The Department said AARO received 757 reports during the period and was reviewing more than 1,600 cases as of June 1, 2024. Those are agency reporting and workload figures—not counts of confirmed unexplained objects, much less extraterrestrial craft.

What “unresolved” does—and does not—tell us
An unresolved classification records the state of an investigation: the available information has not yielded an identification. It does not establish that the object defied known technology, that investigators ruled out ordinary explanations, or that it was extraterrestrial.

AARO’s March 2024 Historical Record Report, Volume 1 states: “AARO found no evidence that any USG investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology.” That conclusion is limited to the investigations and records reviewed; it does not mean every report has been explained.
