This review covers Dallas Jenkins’s 2024 film adaptation of Barbara Robinson’s 1972 children’s book—not the book itself or an earlier screen adaptation. It is a warm, family-oriented Christmas story with a sincere Christian outlook, though its emotional lessons can feel more emphatic than its comedy or storytelling needs.
What is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever about?
Six unruly Herdman siblings take leading roles in a church Christmas pageant. They know little about the Nativity story, and their direct, unconventional approach unsettles a community used to managing the production—and the people in it.
The useful question is not simply whether the Herdmans become better behaved. Their presence makes the adults look again at the Christmas story and at their assumptions about who belongs in the pageant. Comedy and family drama carry an explicitly Christian theme: familiar words can land differently when someone encounters them without the community’s usual expectations.
What works in the film?
The adaptation’s chief strength is its warmth. The children’s disruption gives the familiar pageant premise energy, while the film’s earnestness makes it an accessible choice for viewers seeking gentle holiday entertainment. Adult Beth’s nostalgic narration helps frame the story as a remembered Christmas, and the performances support that soft, sentimental tone.
#1 Best Overall
RogerEbert.com critic Nell Minow called the adaptation “warm-hearted” and said it “glows with the message of hope and kindness.” That is a critic’s assessment, but it captures the film’s appeal for viewers who want its kindness and spiritual conviction front and center. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus similarly describes it as wholesome family entertainment with sincere spiritual conviction.
Where does it fall short?
The same sincerity can become overstatement. Some critics find that the film leans too heavily on sentiment and instruction, leaving less room for sharper comic pacing or a more understated message. The Los Angeles Times review calls it a generic adaptation and questions the effectiveness of adult Beth’s framing: she narrates extensively, yet the review argues the character is held back.
Rank #2
That makes the film’s appeal fairly specific. If you want faith-forward holiday uplift and a gentle family story, its directness may feel comforting. If you prefer a subtler message or comedy that moves with more bite, the emotional emphasis may feel too insistent.
Is it suitable for family viewing?
Rotten Tomatoes lists the 2024 film as PG for thematic material and brief underage smoking. Its family-friendly presentation does not mean it is religiously neutral: the Nativity and Christian themes are central to the story. That combination is worth bearing in mind when choosing it for children or a mixed-faith household.

How does it compare with Barbara Robinson’s book?
Robinson’s source book was published in 1972. The film expands the premise into a feature, with adult Beth, played by Lauren Graham, narrating and young Beth played by Molly Belle Wright. The book is a worthwhile companion if you want to compare how the story works on the page and on screen; the movie is an adaptation, not a replacement for Robinson’s original telling. Is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever worth watching?
Yes, if you are looking for a gentle, explicitly Christian Christmas film whose appeal is warmth rather than comic edge. Its best idea is the way the Herdmans’ unfamiliarity unsettles the adults’ comfortable version of the pageant. The reservation is that the film sometimes explains and emphasizes its message where a quieter touch might have been stronger.
The 2024 film was released theatrically on November 8, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes lists a runtime of 1 hour 39 minutes; RogerEbert.com gives 99 minutes, a small difference in how listings report the running time. At the time Rotten Tomatoes was accessed in 2026, it displayed 92% from 64 critic reviews and 97% from more than 2,500 verified audience ratings. Those are changing snapshots of the reviews and ratings represented on that site, not fixed measures of quality or a guarantee of how any viewer will respond.
