Los Angeles has bookstores for different kinds of visits: new books in Los Feliz, used and rare finds in Downtown LA, art and film titles in West Hollywood, a bookshop-café in Echo Park, and a major independent bookstore in Pasadena. The right choice depends on what you want to browse and how far you want to travel—not a single citywide ranking.
How to choose a Los Angeles bookstore
Time Out Los Angeles’s October 2, 2026 roundup covers 25 independent bookstores across Los Angeles and nearby communities. Use it as a starting point, then narrow the options by neighborhood, the kind of books you want, whether you prefer new or used inventory, and whether events or online ordering matter to you. The roundup is a guide, not a formal ranking based on a shared scoring method.
- Choose by location: Los Feliz, Downtown LA, West Hollywood, Echo Park and Pasadena are distinct destinations; account for the trip before settling on a shop.
- Choose by inventory: Some stores focus on new books, while others offer used or rare titles as well.
- Choose by experience: Events, a café, records, art, or other features may make a shop a better fit for a particular visit.
- Check practical details: Hours and events can change. Confirm with the store before making a same-day trip.
Bookstores to match your interests
Skylight Books: new books in Los Feliz
At 1818 N Vermont Avenue, Skylight Books is a strong option for readers looking for new books across literary fiction, children’s books, graphic novels, California history and culture, political and social sciences, essays, nonfiction, art, photography, film, and music. The shop says it sells new books only and neither buys nor sells used books. Its official contact page lists daily hours of 10 a.m.–10 p.m. and phone order assistance; confirm details before visiting. See Skylight’s selection and book policy or check its contact details.
The Last Bookstore: used, rare, and new finds Downtown
The Last Bookstore, at 453 S Spring Street, suits a visit built around browsing: its official visit page describes new, used, and rare books, along with vinyl, art, and distinctive spaces. The store also hosts readings, signings, and performances; its events page invites visitors to “Catch a reading, signing, performance — or book your own.” The business reports that its flagship spans more than 22,000 square feet and holds over 500,000 books and records; those are store-reported figures, not independently audited counts. Plan a visit, see events, or read the store’s account of its history and scale.

- Check the store’s event calendar if a reading, signing, or performance is part of your plan.
- For online or phone orders, use the store’s official ordering route and confirm availability directly.
- Do not use older listings to plan a stop at Vroman’s Hastings Ranch; Vroman’s says that location is closed.
