Apple’s movie collection is smaller than Netflix’s or Prime Video’s, but its strongest films are unusually distinctive: an Oscar-winning family drama, a demanding Scorsese epic, an inventive animated feature, and documentaries with real cultural bite. These are my picks for the Apple films I’d most confidently recommend, with a separate spotlight on documentary standouts.
Apple’s U.S. pages now generally brand the service as Apple TV, though Apple TV+ remains the familiar name many viewers search for. This list covers Apple Original Films included with the U.S. subscription—not every movie that appears in the Apple TV app. Availability can change by country and over time; Apple’s U.S. film catalog was checked August 18, 2026.

How this list is ranked: “Top-tier” is an editorial judgment, not a raw critic-score ranking. I weigh craft, performances, originality, emotional or intellectual impact, and whether I’d recommend the film confidently to someone who hasn’t seen it. Awards can support a case, but a big budget, famous cast, or prestige label is not enough on its own.
My 10 top-tier Apple movies
1. CODA — best overall recommendation
The verdict: Start here if you want a moving, approachable film that works for a broad range of viewers. Ruby, the hearing child of a Deaf family, is pulled between helping at home and pursuing her own musical ambitions. The drama gets much of its warmth from the family ensemble and from the tension between care for others and the need to choose a future for yourself.

Why it earns a place: CODA is emotionally direct without requiring specialist knowledge or patience for a deliberately difficult style. It is also the clearest awards landmark in Apple’s film slate: Apple identifies it as an Academy Award winner for Best Picture on its film pages.
Best for: Families, newcomers to Apple’s film catalog, and viewers in the mood for an uplifting drama. Its conventional structure may feel less formally adventurous than some films on this list, but that accessibility is part of its appeal.
2. Killers of the Flower Moon — best prestige epic
The verdict: For viewers ready to settle in for a long, morally unsettling historical drama, this is one of Apple’s most ambitious films. Martin Scorsese’s account of the murders and exploitation of the Osage people in Oklahoma centers on the violence surrounding Osage wealth and the people who profited from it. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone lead a formidable cast.

Its scale, patient direction, and attention to betrayal and power make it a weighty piece of historical filmmaking. Apple lists it among its Apple Original Films.
Best for: Viewers who want a serious, expansive drama and are comfortable with a deliberate pace. Its length and grim subject matter make it a poor casual-watch choice; choose something else if you’re looking for a brisk thriller.
3. The Tragedy of Macbeth — best visual achievement
The verdict: Joel Coen’s Shakespeare adaptation is less an attempt to make the play feel ordinary than a concentrated exercise in mood, language, and composition. Black-and-white photography, angular spaces, and minimalist design give the story a severe, almost dreamlike quality. Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand anchor the film.
Why it earns a place: The visual choices feel integral to the tragedy rather than decorative. It is a strong example of a film that earns its place through authorship and atmosphere—not broad accessibility.

Best for: Shakespeare readers, literary-adaptation fans, and art-house viewers. The theatrical language and austere style may be a barrier if you want a straightforward historical drama.
4. Wolfwalkers — best animated film
The verdict: A richly imagined animated adventure set in a folklore-inflected version of Ireland, Wolfwalkers follows a young apprentice hunter whose encounters with a mysterious girl challenge what she has been taught about wolves and the world around her.
Why it earns a place: Its hand-drawn look is expressive and distinctive, and its themes of freedom, fear, and living alongside nature give the adventure substance without weighing it down. Apple includes it among its highlighted films alongside titles such as CODA, Greyhound, and Swan Song on its film pages. It belongs on a best-films list, not just in a children’s corner.
Best for: Animation fans, families, and anyone who wants a visually original story. It is welcoming to younger viewers while offering adults plenty to appreciate.

5. F1 The Movie — best blockbuster crowd-pleaser
The verdict: A 2025 Apple Original built around racing, star power, and spectacle, F1 The Movie is the choice when you want momentum more than solemn prestige. Its central attraction is the sensory appeal of speed and the drama of competition.
Why it earns a place: It provides a useful counterweight to Apple’s slower dramas: this is a polished, high-energy entertainment pick. Apple’s own U.S. App Store description calls it a record-breaking blockbuster; that is Apple’s characterization, not an independent measure of its artistic merit.
Best for: Sports-film fans, action viewers, Brad Pitt fans, and group viewing. Its strengths are scale, pace, and spectacle; don’t choose it expecting the moral complexity of Killers of the Flower Moon.

6. Tetris — best high-concept thriller
The verdict: A story about securing the rights to a video game might sound like paperwork, but Tetris turns a complicated business and rights dispute into a buoyant thriller. Taron Egerton gives it an energetic center as the entrepreneur caught up in the scramble.
Why it earns a place: The film mixes commercial stakes, geopolitical intrigue, and dark humor into an unusually watchable package. Treat it as inspired by real events, not a literal, scene-by-scene reconstruction: its chronology and tone take liberties.
Best for: Viewers who like fact-inspired thrillers, business stories, or films about technology and media.
7. Greyhound — best compact war thriller
The verdict: This World War II naval film keeps its focus tight: a convoy under threat, difficult tactical choices, and mounting pressure. It favors suspense and procedure over an expansive cast of subplots.
Why it earns a place: The narrow setting helps create tension, and the film moves with a clear sense of urgency. Apple highlights Greyhound among its notable movies on its film pages.

8. Swan Song — best science-fiction drama
The verdict: This is contemplative science fiction rather than a futuristic chase. Mahershala Ali plays the emotional center of a story about identity, family, grief, and an ethically fraught choice.

Why it earns a place: The speculative premise serves the character drama instead of overwhelming it. Its central questions linger because the film is interested in what a person means to the people they love, not just in the mechanics of its technology.
Best for: Viewers who prefer intimate, idea-driven science fiction to action and spectacle. Its quiet pace is a feature for some and a drawback for others.

The verdict: A low-key, contemporary story about attraction, immaturity, and life in transition, this is one of the better choices when you want people and relationships rather than historical scale or effects.
Why it earns a place: It has the personal, independent-film feel of a Sundance-oriented character piece, and it allows its characters to be appealing without making them perfect. Its tonal ambiguity is part of the point, though viewers looking for a conventional romantic comedy may find it less tidy than expected.
Best for: A quiet movie night, especially for viewers who like intimate relationship films with some rough edges.
10. The Velvet Underground — best documentary for music fans
The verdict: Todd Haynes’s documentary looks at the Velvet Underground and the cultural scene around the band, treating its music as part of a larger story about art, experimentation, and influence.

Why it earns a place: It is a strong example of Apple’s documentary side: formally inventive and more interested in capturing a creative world than delivering a simple chronology. The split-screen approach and archival material make it especially rewarding for viewers who enjoy documentary form as well as music history.

Best for: Music fans, documentary viewers, and anyone interested in the New York art scene around the band. For a political documentary alternative, try Boys State, a compelling look at young people engaging in a model political system.

Apple’s strongest film recommendations are not all narrative features. If documentaries are your priority, add these to the queue:
- Boys State: A lively, revealing political documentary that observes teenagers organizing and campaigning in a model government setting.
- The Year Earth Changed: A nature documentary option for family viewing, built around the changing relationship between people and wildlife during the pandemic period.
- The Velvet Underground: The top choice here for music history and formally adventurous nonfiction filmmaking.
Good picks by mood
- For the whole family: Choose CODA for live action or Wolfwalkers for animation.
- For action and spectacle: Start with F1 The Movie; choose Greyhound for tighter, tactical suspense.
- For serious film lovers: Pick Killers of the Flower Moon for scale or The Tragedy of Macbeth for visual austerity.
- For science fiction without a big action emphasis: Watch Swan Song.
- For a relationship story: Try Cha Cha Real Smooth; for something lighter and more stylish, consider On the Rocks.
- For music and documentary fans: Watch The Velvet Underground; choose Boys State for politics or The Year Earth Changed for nature.
- For a brisk, playful thriller: Tetris is the most immediate pick in this group.
Worth knowing, but not quite top-tier
These films may be right for a particular mood, but I would not put them in the same essential tier as the ten above:

- The Gorge: An entertaining action-romance genre pick, rather than a clear critical pinnacle.
- Wolfs: A star-driven crime comedy with straightforward audience appeal.
- Napoleon: Visually impressive historical spectacle, but a divisive recommendation.
- The Instigators: A straightforward crime comedy, not essential viewing.
- Fly Me to the Moon: A polished romantic period comedy that falls short of the top tier.
- Argylle: Playful spy excess best approached as a deliberately over-the-top diversion.
Apple’s film catalog also lists newer and prominent titles, including The Gorge, Fountain of Youth, Napoleon, and Killers of the Flower Moon. A film’s prominence in the catalog is not the same thing as a recommendation that it is among Apple’s best.
What counts as an Apple TV+ movie?
For this list, an Apple movie means an Apple Original Film available through the Apple TV subscription in the U.S. Some Apple Originals first reach theaters before becoming subscription titles. The Apple TV app is also a storefront: it can show third-party movies to rent or buy, as well as content from other services. Finding a movie in the app does not mean it is included in the Apple TV subscription. Apple explains how to find and watch Apple Originals in its support guide.
Catalogs can differ by region and change with distribution windows. The availability notes here refer to the U.S. catalog checked August 18, 2026; check the title in your local Apple TV app before subscribing for a specific film. Apple also says features and content availability may vary by country or region in its U.S. App Store listing.
Is Apple TV worth subscribing to for movies?
It can be, if you have several unwatched films on this list or value a focused slate of Apple Originals alongside the service’s television programming. It is a weaker fit if what you want is a vast, constantly rotating library of licensed movies. The service’s appeal is concentration and selectivity, not sheer volume.
Apple’s U.S. service page lists a price of $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial; offers and terms can change, so check the U.S. signup page before joining. The service is called Apple TV on that page, but that does not mean you need an Apple TV 4K box. Apple says its service is available through the Apple TV app and on a range of devices, including smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android and Windows devices, and the web.
If you subscribe only for movies, a practical approach is to start with the films you are most excited about, then decide whether you want to keep the service. For a warm introduction, choose CODA; for a demanding prestige drama, choose Killers of the Flower Moon; for a big, entertaining night, choose F1 The Movie.
