The Furious is the strongest provisional pick: Esquire named it the best action movie of 2026 so far, praising its choreography. But its release-year label is not consistent across guides, and no single ranking establishes an objective winner. Here’s a shortlist by action style, with scheduled titles kept distinct from confirmed availability.
Best overall pick: The Furious
Esquire’s September 17, 2026 roundup names Kenji Tanigaki’s Hong Kong action film its best action movie of the year so far. Xie Miao plays a deaf and mute father who joins forces with an investigative journalist, played by Joe Taslim, to pursue the criminal network that kidnapped his daughter. Esquire’s praise for the choreography makes it the clearest recommendation for viewers looking for fight-focused action.
There is a release-year wrinkle: Rotten Tomatoes places The Furious first in its “Best New Action Movies of 2026” guide, but labels the film “(2025).” Release years and guide eligibility can differ by market or listing convention, so treat its inclusion here as a 2026-so-far recommendation, not proof that it opened in 2026 in your country. The guide displayed a 97% Tomatometer and 90% Popcornmeter when accessed in 2026; those scores can change and are platform indicators, not a universal verdict.
Choose by the kind of action you want
| Film | Action style | Why it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| The Rip | Crime action | Esquire includes it among its 2026 picks for viewers seeking crime-focused action. |
| Mortal Kombat II | Video-game fantasy action | A franchise-based choice for viewers after heightened fantasy action. Esquire includes it in its roundup, and the Associated Press lists it as a theatrical release in its summer guide. |
| The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day | Large-scale adventure and franchise action | Esquire’s selections offer these as options for viewers looking for big-screen spectacle and familiar franchises. |
| Hope | Korean science-fiction action | Esquire describes it as a Korean sci-fi action film. |
| Resident Evil | Horror-inflected action | Esquire’s selection is a reboot based on Capcom’s survival-horror game franchise, making it a fit for viewers open to horror alongside action. |
| My Dearest Assassin | Thai action | The Associated Press listed it in its May schedule as arriving on Netflix; check local availability rather than assuming it is currently streaming where you live. |
| In the Grey | Heist action | The Associated Press describes Guy Ritchie’s film as following elite operatives on a difficult heist. |
Scheduled fall picks: check whether they have opened
The Associated Press’s fall release guide included Mutiny, starring Jason Statham, and Ramayana, an Indian action epic, among films scheduled for later in 2026. A schedule is not confirmation that a film has opened on time. Check the current local release listing before treating either as available to watch.

How to use this shortlist

- For genre variety: Choose among crime action, game-based fantasy, science-fiction, and horror-action in the table.
- For a film that may not yet be available: Verify its local theatrical or streaming status; dates and platforms in release guides can change and do not guarantee availability in every country.
