Think you know Abbey Road? Take this album-specific quiz on its recording and release chronology, the famous cover, the original working title, and the track sequence. Answer all 20 before checking the key—especially the questions that separate what was recorded last from what was released last.

Abbey Road trivia questions

Write down your answers before scrolling to the key. The questions draw on the album’s documented history and official track listing; cover interpretations that go beyond the documented photo session are not treated as facts.

  1. On what date was Abbey Road first released?
  2. Was it the Beatles’ last album recorded, their last album released, or both?
  3. Which Beatles album was released after Abbey Road in May 1970?
  4. Who photographed the cover?
  5. On what date was the cover photograph taken?
  6. Where was the zebra crossing in the cover photograph?
  7. In what order do the Beatles appear crossing the road, from left to right?
  8. How many photographs did Macmillan take during the session, according to Abbey Road Studios?
  9. How many times did the Beatles cross back and forth for the session, according to the band’s anniversary account?
  10. What was the album’s working title?
  11. Which engineer’s cigarette brand inspired that title, according to Abbey Road Studios?
  12. What was the initial cover concept before the band chose a photograph outside the studios?
  13. Which Beatle proposed taking the cover photograph outside EMI Studios?
  14. Which song opens the official 17-track album listing?
  15. Which song follows “Come Together” on the album?
  16. Which song follows “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”?
  17. Which song follows “Octopus’s Garden” on side one?
  18. Which two songs were recorded together as a single piece?
  19. Who wrote “Golden Slumbers” under the credited songwriting name?
  20. According to The Beatles’ official album page, how many of the album’s 81 British chart weeks were spent at No. 1?

Answer key

Release and recording chronology

  1. 26 September 1969. The Beatles’ official album page gives that as the release date.
  2. It was the last Beatles album recorded, not the last released. The distinction is the central chronology trap: Let It Be came out later.
  3. Let It Be. It was released in May 1970, after most of its recording had taken place in January 1969, according to the official album chronology.

The cover photograph

  1. Iain Macmillan.
  2. 8 August 1969. The Beatles’ anniversary account dates the session to that day; Abbey Road Studios also identifies it as a Friday session.
  3. The zebra crossing outside EMI Studios, now Abbey Road Studios, in London. The official album page describes the crossing near the studio entrance in NW8.
  4. John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, George Harrison. That is the pictured order from left to right, as given in the Beatles’ anniversary account.
  5. Six photographs. Abbey Road Studios says Macmillan took six shots from a stepladder while a policeman held traffic.
  6. Three crossings back and forth. That count comes from the Beatles’ anniversary account. It is separate from the six photographs; the sources do not say that one photograph was taken per crossing.

Working title and cover idea

  1. Everest. Abbey Road Studios recounts that as the album’s working title.
  2. Geoff Emerick’s. The studio’s account connects the name to the recording engineer’s cigarette brand.
  3. The group’s silhouettes against a white mountain. The Nepal idea was abandoned in favor of photographing the band outside the studio.
  4. Paul McCartney. Abbey Road Studios credits him with proposing the outside-the-studio photograph during a recording break. Its account of the cover session also says McCartney selected the frame in which the four appeared to be walking in time.

Tracks and chart detail

  1. “Come Together.”
  2. “Something.”
  3. “Oh! Darling.”
  4. “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” These opening side-one tracks appear in sequence on the official “Golden Slumbers” page, which includes the album listing.
  5. “Golden Slumbers” and “Carry That Weight.” The Beatles’ official song page says they were recorded together as a single piece. “Carry That Weight” follows “Golden Slumbers” in the album sequence.
  6. Paul McCartney, credited as Lennon-McCartney. George Martin arranged and scored the strings and brass, according to the same official song page.
  7. 17 weeks. The Beatles’ official album page reports 17 weeks at No. 1 across 81 British chart weeks. It also reports 11 U.S. weeks at No. 1 during an initial 83-week chart stay.

What the cover does—and doesn’t—tell you

The cover shows a real crossing outside the studio, photographed during a documented session. Its location and production details are well established; that evidence does not establish the truth of fan theories about hidden messages or symbolic meanings. For the making of the image, Abbey Road Studios’ 2019 retrospective describes the abandoned mountain concept, traffic control, stepladder, and six selected shots.

Sources and edition note

The chronology, cover order, track sequence, and chart figures above are drawn from The Beatles’ official album page, anniversary account, and “Golden Slumbers” page, alongside Abbey Road Studios’ cover-session retrospective. These are album-history facts, not a claim about which editions are currently sold. Abbey Road Studios’ 2019 release announcement describes formats issued for that anniversary, including standard and archival editions, but does not establish their present availability.
