Beauty and the Beast made its Perth stage debut at Crown Theatre on 24 July 2025—30 years after the original Australian production opened in Melbourne. The Perth season was part of a reimagined Australian touring production, not the musical’s first appearance in Australia.
What happened in Perth?
The first Perth performance took place at Crown Theatre on Thursday, 24 July 2025. It was the show’s first season in Perth; the 2025 performances are now historical, and the available sources do not establish the season’s exact closing date. Aussie Theatre’s first-night report confirms the debut. The earlier Ticketmaster listing records the announced venue and July 2025 timing, not current ticket availability.
PerthNow announced the season on 22 October 2024, describing Perth and Adelaide as first-time cities for the production after its run in other Australian cities. Its announcement quoted Disney Theatrical Group executive producer Anne Quart: “We are thrilled to bring Beauty and the Beast, as reimagined by members of the brilliant original creative team, to Adelaide and Perth for the very first time.”
Why “30 years” refers to the Australian premiere
The comparison is between two Australian milestones: the first local production opened at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in 1995, while the reimagined touring production reached Perth for the first time in 2025. The musical itself was older than both events: its stage adaptation opened on Broadway in 1994, based on Disney’s 1991 animated film.

Disney says the original Australian staging, starring Rachael Beck as Belle, Michael Cormick as Beast, Hugh Jackman as Gaston and Bert Newton as Cogsworth, played in Melbourne and Sydney for more than two years. The company’s 2025 retrospective recounts that history and the later tour. Disney Australia’s retrospective also reports that the original production received a 1996 award.
How the Perth production fit into the national tour
Disney announced the reimagined Australian production on 17 August 2022, with a Sydney premiere planned for June 2023. Members of the original Broadway creative team returned, including director and choreographer Matt West, composer Alan Menken, lyricist Tim Rice, book writer Linda Woolverton and costume designer Ann Hould-Ward. Disney’s production announcement describes the staging as a new Australian production, rather than a revival of the 1995 local staging.

By the time the tour reached Perth, Aussie Theatre reported that more than 1.2 million Australian tickets had been sold. Disney’s later 2025 retrospective said the tour had welcomed more than 1.3 million Australians and that the company would tour to Singapore from December 2025. These are figures from different reports and dates: the first was published before the Perth season, while Disney’s total came later.

The Australian cast recording and Broadway history
The Australian production’s cast recording won the 1996 ARIA award for Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album. The award is recorded on ARIA’s official 1996 winners list. The record establishes the recording’s history and award; it does not establish whether a particular edition is currently available to buy.
For comparison, D23’s reference entry for the original Broadway production records 5,464 performances and 46 previews before its final performance. Those figures describe the Broadway run, not the Australian tour. D23’s production history also gives the Broadway chronology and award details.
